i'm class of 2017 lol sorry wrong class.

GPA and standardized test scores do not inspire confidence. But try to capitalize on your extracurricular activities, and experience as a restaurant manager.

I don’t think that your hooks in themselves are “hooks.” The experiences that came out of being child of immigrant parents and having low income may constitute “hookiness,” but not the statements themselves. UCLA and UC Berkeley brother should matter none in your admission.

Also, hardly anybody looks in Class-specific forums for UCLA. You may have gotten more responses in the general UCLA forum.

Thing with personal statements, your don’t want to talk about your family. you want to talk about you and how your family has shaped you. its all about you!.. don’t make the mistake of going on about your brothers or how hard life was for your parents and your family. I also don’t think its really a hook statement -_-. My parents were immigrants from china, low income family, lower middle class, they don’t speak english, I’ve been a translator for them since I was eight. Where I’m from, its alot more common than you think. Its what your parent’s background, how your experience growing up with that situation, and how its shaped your aspirations that is the hook and meat and your personal statements. At least thats what I was told my junior/senior year of high school.

And yea, you’ll get more replies from the general UCLA forum.
