Some of my friends that got rejection letters said that it said only 4,600 students were accepted to UCLA. On my acceptance letter it only said that 47,000 people applied and not how many were accepted. That's freaking 9.8% acceptance rate!! is that possible???

Below is the actually text from the UCLA rejection letter. What they mean is that they have a target enrollment of 4625 --but to reach that target they have to admit more because not everyone admitted will enroll. What I hear is that they admit about 25% (1 in 4) of their applicants -- so just under 12,000? So that leaves about 35,000 (some very qualified, I'm sure) applicants wondering what they should have done differently.

UCLA continues to receive more applications for admission than we can accommodate in our freshman class. For fall 2006, we received more than 47,000 applications for 4,625 available spaces for freshmen.

No, it doesn't have a 9.8% acceptance rate. I'm sure they were saying that there were 47,000 applicants for 4,600 spots in the freshman class, meaning that 4,600 kids would be in the freshman class. I think more than 10,000 were accepted.
