UCLA Alumni Scholarship Interview

^ What if I get the call, but will be out of town this weekend, i.e. I’m from the Bay Area and I’ll be in Anaheim for a school band function?

P.S. I haven’t gotten the call yet.

^^Then you have quite the decision to make!

I guess there’s a small possibility they could do like a Monday interview, but I doubt it since there are about 6 panel members, and that would mean they’d have to all get together again just to interview one person.

So that would be something to discuss with them should the conflict occur. But my guess is that you either do the weekend interview, or don’t interview at all.

And if I don’t interivew, I can’t get the scholarship, right? ****

Correct (10 char).

Um, so if you have no loans as part of your FA package as a Regents scholar, how does the competiton money work? Do they use it as part of your grant money? I’m rather confused…

Haha, wished I had applied back when I was going through this - didn’t think I was ever going to attend UCLA so didn’t bother with Cal or UCLA’s Alumni Scholarships

Well, I just had my alumni scholarship interview today. It was 4 people (ranging from '91 graudates to '47 graduates). They ranged from public health admin to PE teacher.

I went in. Basically you have SEVEN minutes to answer three questions TOTAL.

(1) If you were apart of a circus, would you chose to be the ticket passer person, the lion tamer, or the clown - WHY?

(2) It was something about leadership. What is the best way to be a leader? Are your methods effective? (Something of that sort)

(3) If you had a day with out work/school - what would you do?

I hope this helps. I always go on these forums to get help. I think it’s dumb when people become ‘competitive’ on the internet - lol.

Make sure you use up the 7 minutes. I only used up 5:30sec and had nothing else planned. Then they’ll ask you any questions you have about UCLA.

DO NOT FEEL BAD if your interview is only 10 minutes long. That’s how long they’re supposed to be!!! Mine was about 15 - 20 minutes - and I felt bad. But then I found out that on avg. thats how long that they should be.

When your giving your interview, make sure your HITTING the question as well as giving examples from your life when you were a leader etc. Also, be sure to look at all the interviewers and shake their hands. Feel comfortable, and DO NOT BE Nervous! There are 4 interviewers staring at you, but they’re all friendly and very nice.

Hope this helped.

wow my interview today was totally different. i had about 8-9 people in there, and we were on a 15 min time limit so there wasn’t really time for all of that. I wanted to shake hands but she kinda instructed me to sit down to start right away, so just did verbal hello’s.

i had 5 questions, and they were totally different. one was about current events, one was what i read, one was my leadership style, my dream career (besides what im majoring in), and soemthing about charity organizations. it wasn’t too bad, i was kind of nervous but i think i did pretty good. and yea you can ask questions after, we really got to talking so my interview was a bit longer lol. does anyone know when we hear back for round 2?

Just did mine today. I think there were eight people… all really friendly.

I had a lot of fun  answered about eight questions.

just finished my interview, that was the hardest one i’ve ever had in my life. 6 faces stared as me as i answered 4 questions (given 8 min total, i guess they gave a lot of time for those who perhaps needed to think a little before answering). i suppose i did alright but i felt like my thoughts were so jumbled especially because they asked me about American foreign policy (what high school senior is gonna know a vast amount of info on that?!).

://////

wow seems like i had the easiest interview. All the questions made me think but not too “out there” and they did not time me at all, they let me talk for however long i liked.

does anyone know when we hear back? my district’s next round is next sun (week from today)…hmm.

I’m pretty sure this was covered earlier, but I’ll go through it again. If you get second or third in your district, you win $4,000 over 4 years (upon completion of 30 hrs of community service/year). If you win 1st in your district, you go to the semi-final round, where you compete to go to State Finals at UCLA on April 24th/25th. At State Finals, you are guaranteed at least 6k, and can win up to $17,500 through a serious of competitions. Regents Scholars/Athletic Scholarships DO NOT MATTER. The ONLY exception to this would be if you earned so much money in scholarships that it was going over the cost of books/tuition/R&B (in other words, UCLA cannot pay you to go to school; the most you could win is a full-ride, not more past that) If you have loans, there are opportunities in the form of grants that will help cancel out those loans. These grants are in addition to your scholarship. If you do NOT have loans, you will still be granted the scholarship amount, but will not qualify for additional money in the form of grants.

I’m glad most of your interviews went well! I actually didn’t think mine went that well last year in comparison to all the other scholarship interviews I did, but I ended up winning, so I guess you never know. I think mine lasted about 15 minutes, and it was also the hardest interview I’ve ever had.

As for when you should hear back, I think I heard back a day or two later. Good luck!

i got a call yesterday informing me that i made it past the first round. is the format for the second round the same? (panel of 6-7 people asking random questions)

^^I believe so. Except the questions will be different (obviously) lol.

But congrats, you have at least $4k!

Ah. So as I’m currently getting a full ride for Regents, the Alumni scholarships cancel out part of my loans -> so i will not get more $$ then a full ride. That’s what I thought. Thanks for the help!

I just had my interview… the questions where really hard and there were ten people there staring at me, but they were all super nice and friendly. They asked about thins like leadership, alot about your opinion on things, and what is important to you.

Hello vc08,

Thank you so much for the information about UCLA Alumni Scholarship. I was wondering if you may have some advice on preparing a good application in order to get an interview for this scholarship.

Thanks so much.
