I got the $4000 and was chosen to represent my district to the next level. Is the next level the state finals? i read on the website about what the state finalists do (weekend competition, entailing essays, interviews, and problem-solving challenges). is anyone a state finalist in here? has anyone already been to the weekend competition? if you have, what is the weekend like? also, how do we complete the required 30 hours of community service?

First off, CONGRATS grumptious for getting the $4000!!!!! you are also now an alumni scholar with all the benefits that come along with it

ok to answer your question (I'm an Alumni Scholar):

State finals is during April 16-17 for ALL state finalists (around 55 or so). Is that the weekend of your next competition? If not, then you are moving onto your regional interview, and you'll need to come out on top of that one first before you can move onto State Finals.

The 30 hours of community service is really easy. There's TONS of opportunities to do this through the Alumni Scholars Club, plus you can do your own "service." I play in the marching band and I'm involved in Model UN at UCLA, and that counts as community service...basically, any UCLA-related activity counts as community service. Community service through Alumni Scholars Club can include helping out with homecoming, doing scholarship outreach stuff... there's way too many activities for me to list off. Basically, the Alumni Scholars Club presents a lot of short-term service and leadership opportunities for you throughout the year, so that way, it's flexible for your schedule, you get to meet a lot of different people, try different activities, etc.

They will host a workshop on Scholarship Renewal and community service requirements during fall quarter, so you can learn more about that then.

Again, congratulations! Welcome to the family =)

thanks so much! i dont know when my next interviews are. hopefully i made it to state! i'm excited. o yeah, i also got the regents scholarship for UCLA. do you think they'll cut back on the financial aid i'm getting from regents because of the alumni?

hey grumptious, congrats!!!!

I just got the call today for the first interview. Could you give me some pointers on what you did, what they ask, and such? Thanks!

I got a call for my interview too. I agree with pecwog... any advice? I'm really excited/nervous.

I'm in a pool of 10 people competing for four scholarships. I'm the only one from my county that even applied, lol.

good luck to pecwong and nobleguy! more potential alumni scholars!

Thanks kfc4u... I hope they choose me:)

"yeah, i also got the regents scholarship for UCLA. do you think they'll cut back on the financial aid i'm getting from regents because of the alumni?"

if it is loans, they should still offer it to you. but if it is grants or something, they might cut it back (not sure though). however, (im not sure if regents does this too), but alumni turns some of your loans into grants!!!! hmm i dont know how much it's going to be this year (maybe around $5-6k?)... but just for a personal example, i accepted around $1k of loans last year and the alumni scholarship turned it into a $1k grant!!! so i ended up on no loans.

as of right now, i have no loans. my regents, university grant, and university scholarship covers everything except my EFC. so i was thinking the alumni can go into paying off my EFC? i hope they don't cut back on grants and still make me pay the full EFC.

wow you have a lot of free money!!!!!!!!!!!! haha i'm envious!

Actually, I don't think Regents or Alumni will cut into your grants. They will just give you their basic award ($4000 for you so far) and no additional grants since you won't qualify. So basically, that money can be used to pay off your EFC.

I highly doubt they'll cut back your university grants and scholarship.

Good job so far!

Noooooo...I haven't been called for an interview. I guess I didn't get the alumni thing. =(
I can't believe I spent so much time writing the essays too.
=( =( =( =( =( =(

grumptious, I'm in the same boat as you are. I've advanced to the next level but have no idea what to expect.

Please post after you go and I'll do the same.

i found out that i only advanced to the regionals (level above district), which encompasses i think all of Orange County. There were 320 applicants at my district level, and i'm guessing at most 50 people at regionals level competing against me. good luck!

320??? omg... I competed against only 10 people in a region from Sacramento all the way to the Oregon border. I dunno how many people I can expect to interview against next though. When is the next round for you? Mine is this Saturday, April 2.

haha. i meant 320 applicants in my region. they then selected 10 for the interview. um.. my interview is on april 3, but i'm not going to be around (spring break obligations). so they might let me do a phone interview, which is a total disadvantage.

I'd hate to be the person who narrowed 320 down to 10. I doubt that there was much more than 10 in my region that even applied.

That's too bad you can't show up...
