I was admitted to UCLA's BioE program. UCLA has been one of my top choices for a while, but while I was researching I noticed something troubling. UCLA's BioE doesn't seem to be ABET accredited, and it doesn't seem to match up with the reputation of the rest of the school, which I thought was odd because UCLA is normally very strong with Biology. Anyway, I was wondering if people know if this will become a problem with grad school or employment, if my degree doesn't come from an ABET accredited program. Or are they currently trying to get accredited, or does it not matter? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

its very new so probably not accredited…go to UCSD for BioE…its light years more prestigious and better quality

To be honest, I would, but I was rejected to UCSD BioE. I don’t really see how that works, but it is what it is.

Not an issue. We were the in process of accreditation last year, the first year we could qualify (need 4 or 5 graduated classes of students before you can do it). You’ll be fine admissions wise… Yale Med, WA-Stl Med, UW grad, MIT grad, etc. etc. are some of the places my friends in the major are currently attending and I’m headed to a tech company full-time.

The next ABET review is in 2012 and the program will be accredited by the time you graduate.

ABET reviews every 6 years and in 2006 the major was only 2 years old so they were not eligible for accreditation yet.

But it hasn’t hurt the grads from the previous classes. Don’t worry about it.
