Hi I am a psych major at SMC and planning to apply to UCLA and UC Berkeley. For UCLA im in the TAP (Scholars program). I currently have a 3.53 GPA which I know is pretty low. I think im on the edge for ucla but I've written a pretty good personal statement, have a lot of extras and my grades show a trend (1st yr end with a 2.9 and 2nd yr got straight A's and bumped it up to a 3.53). Hopefully this semester i'll get straight A's and apply with a 3.6.

I'm really depending on my personal statement to save me, since i herd that UCLA and UCB actually reads it. hopefully the grade trend works to my advantage too. so i just want to know what my chances. oh something that sucks is that i have 3 Ws. i had 2 during that one year that i went through a trend of getting that 2.9 gpa. something that im scared about is about my 3rd W. i recently dropped a class a week ago. it was a sociology class which is unrelated to my major. but i can explain all my Ws in the personal statement part 3 so that will be fine right?

i have other schools for back up such as UCI, UCSD (signed tag for both) but i want to know what are my chances for berkeley and la.

the upward trend helps a lot, but your GPA is still on the low side. The W’s don’t matter but it’s definitely doesn’t look good that you had another one in sociology this semester (will it effect IGETC?). Write killer essay’s and I’ll say 30-35% at UCLA/Cal. Don’t be surprised if you’re rejected from both though.

TAP certification will boost your chances to UCLA by a lot. The upward trend will be very helpful as well. Write a great essay and I’d say your chances to UCLA are great!

Thanks for the info guys! i really hope TAP will help me a lot. and that dropped sociology class will definitely not effect my igetc.

and to jeremy: well i herd that uc’s don’t let you change majors once you are accepted into that school.

since my gpa aint great im really depending on my essay and extra activities to save me. hopefully i’ll get all A’s this semester to boost that gpa from 3.5 to 3.6 so i have a better shot. that .1 addition is significant.
