So today my friend (UCLA TAP anthro admit for Fall) found out he got a D in his Calculus course this spring.

Clearly this has nothing to do with the Anthropology major, but he's worrying about what's going to happen to his offer of admission. We're both worried since it is still a D, but this semester he will have gotten 3 A's and this 1 D.

He has taken every Anthro class our CC offers (more than the prereqs) and it would be a shame if this one D in something completely unrelated to his field would hurt his admission.

If yes, then he is recinded. This is an absolute requirement of any school, you must have your transferable math class done by the prior spring. Their is a chance in heck that if he SIGNS UP FOR A SUMMER MATH CLASS RIGHT NOW , he may not be rescinded . He needs to have a very good reason for failing, something along the lines of an unavoidable emergency that required him to leave the state for 2 week.

If not, then its up to UCLA- only they know if they want to reccind him .

No, he has completed pre-calculus already last year, and did well in it.

Apparently after calculating, his GPA will drop to a cumulative 3.2 GPA which isn’t as bad as he thought, but the D just worries him still.

Now what? He’s planning on trying to track down his professor tomorrow and explain the situation, and if not probably contact UCLA about it next week. If by chance he was rescinded, could he just retake calculus in the fall or this summer? How should he go about doing this?

Yeah he has Igetc done, and around 75ish units done also, and the GPA will only fall from 3.4-3.2. I mean, I would think it do be ridiculous to rescind over a class that has nothing to do with anthropology, but I guess we’ll have to see.

My counter argument is you shouldn’t take difficult classes you don’t need to take .
Period , or if you do take them pass no pass.
Hopefully he wont be rescinded

I think he’ll be fine. When he reports the grade I hope he has a good reason like he missed a major exam because he was terribly ill, etc… Just in case

He wanted to get a jump start on pre-med courses, but it was not necessary. But yeah, there is clearly more of a need for math in accounting than in anthropology. The whole thing is stressing her out because she worked pretty hard to get her admission. What would be a valid excuse other than the whole terribly ill thing?

I am in a similar situation and Im transfering to UCSB for econ. I have also been trying to jump start on pre-med courses, and this spring I might be getting a D in second semester gen chem due to personal issues I had. My GPA is also going to fall from a 3.43 to a 3.23. I spoke to an admissions counselor at UCSB and they said that if I got a D it doesnt matter if the course doesnt have to do with your major, its still a D on your transcript. But nothing is for sure until they review it again if that D does get on your record. The best thing to do is to not stress too much over it cause whats done is done.

I guess he’ll have to give admissions a call on Monday. Does anyone know worst case scenarios? Possibly being deferred a quarter, or being able to retake the course over summer or fall?

Im an econ major myself and if I got a D in art or something, it shouldn’t affect my admission

I would think that being deferred a quarter or being allowed to retake the class during summer as a good case scenario. Worst case having the admission rescinded.

I do hope you friend is able to go to UCLA. One of my friends received a D in calc as well, but in her situation it’s required for her major. I’m looking around to reference other people in similar situations. She’s supposed to go to UCD so if your friend is OK then it gives a little more hope to her situation since UCD isn’t as prestigious as UCLA which I’d assume would be less strict? She does have a medical reason for not doing well though I don’t know how serious the medical reason has to be to be considered legit enough. I mean, it’s not like cancer bad or something like that… I’m kind of stressing out since we were supposed to be roommates.
