I got into UCLA for Anthropology BA but am contemplating on switching to the BS major, Cognitive Science major, or the newly established Human Biology & Society major, since I am planning on going to dental school and the science courses for the BS program are a necessity. I heard from another member on the forum that it is very easy and only takes a matter of minutes to change from a BA to a BS on orientation day. I unfortunately have not completed all my science prereqs (I'm missing chem1B, 1 semester of organic chemistry, genetics, & both calculus classes) :( Will I have to take these heavy duty science courses in the mix with my upper division major work when at UCLA if I switch to Anthropology BS? Please let me know

I'd really appreciate any feedback & advice from any new transfer students facing the same/similar situations or from current UCLA Anthropology students.

my friend got in last year to the ba and switched it to bs and he had absolutely no gen bio or gen chem done. not even his math. all he pretty much had was igetc. so hes actually taking them at ucla now. hes pretty much taking freshmen classes as a junior

That must be very tough & brutal Is it very difficult for him to manage & juggle all those heavy duty courses? It’d be awesome if he could let me know his experiences & possibly give me some feedback or advice. I’d appreciate it tremendously

oh yeah he has a hard time. he keeps telling me that he wish he stayed at our cc to finish the courses. he wont be able to finish in 2 years though. itll be about 2 years +2 quarters or something like that. maybe even 3 years depending how he wants his workload to be

@SMCguy No, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to complete the required sciences for dental school. I’m just a bit nervous since many of my friends have informed me that the sciences are quite tough at UCLA. Nonetheless, I’m going to persevere, focus, and work immensely hard to earn a BS degree in Anthropology

@UCLAAnthro Did you switch to a BS in Anthropology or get accepted as a BS Anthro major? If you switched, please let me know what it was like and how you effectively managed to space things out and make good progress towards completing all the prereqs. I’d appreciate any feedback, advice, and information immensely

That’s a good attitude to have! Make sure you look into other majors now so you can discuss with the counselors on Orientation day. I’ve heard they will tell you how to change and you may even be able to change that day if you can get the other dept to sign off.

@SMCguy Thanks! Yes, I definitely intend on having a good set of backup/alternative majors to decide on & explore with the counselors but as of now, I’m pretty much sticking with Anthropology since I’m immensely fascinated with the subject & the remarkable applications and the potential impact it has on a myriad of fields, especially dentistry. Nonetheless, it’ll be excellent to receive the UCLA counselors’ invaluable feedback & guidance, especially in regards to establishing a solid roadmap to successfully make it through the 2 years @UCLA. Overall, it’s going to be awesome to embark on the journey @UCLA. Maybe I’ll see you around in one of our Anthro classes

hello so I am an aspiring anthro. major wanting to transfer to ucla as a bs, were you able to change your major from ba to bs?

I am currently in my second semester at CC and do not know whether i will be able to complete every single course by the time i want to apply for transfer next year. Thanks hope to hear from you.
