Hey all.
I’m an international student at a community college in CA. I am going to apply as an Anthropology major (BA) this Fall, but I’m worrying because I’m not going to complete the major requirements prior to the admission (because I have to go back to my country temporarily from this summer for some reasons). How will that affect my application?
This is my info:
・3.78 transferable GPA
・Completed IGETC and 60+ units
・Completed only TWO of the THREE prereqs (major GPA: 4.0)
・Activities: two semesters of Teaching Assistant, and one semester of club officer
・Plan to do an internship for 6 months before applying (15-20 hours a week) + extra work
・NOT going to attend college the next fall/spring semester (this is ok according to an advisor)
Well it is possible to take the rest of the prereq course this summer, but there is only one course available, and the professor of the course has a very bad reputation (rated 2.2/5.0 on RateMyProfessor, and many people said she is the WORST prof). There is only her for that course through a year. So I thought it is better to go without completing prereq’s than to take her class with a C. Also, I can work harder if I don’t attend school only for this course…
According to the statistics from UCLA, the avg GPA for admitted students last year was around 3.5 ( more than 60% of the applicants were admitted).
So what do you think about my situation? Do I have a disadvantage if I don’t complete all the prereq courses?
Any tips or inside information as an Anthro major?
Thanks.
I’d say you have a solid shot. Would it be possible to take the course at another CC this summer? Some colleges offer online courses that are pretty manageable. I’d recommend considering it.
Hi I’m also an anthro BA applying next yr. I think you really do have a great chance of getting in, but I thought there are 4 pre-reqs for anthro BA. 1. human evolution 2.archaeology 3.culture and society 4. culture and communication.
Idk I could be wrong, I’m freaking scared myself so yea…
I got in to Anthro with 2/3 pre-reqs missing, no ECs, and a 3.71. As long as the course isn’t articulated, I don’t think they care not to mention you’re already over qualified.
Hi, Anthro major here going to UCLA in the fall. I had no EC’s and my gpa is 3.3. I’m not sure how bad it’s going to look that you’re missing the prereq, but maybe your gpa and EC’s might weigh the difference. They might let you in, they might not. I say that because you have the extra year to take the one course so they’re going to ask why you didn’t just take it when you had enough time to do so. There’s 4 prereqs and only one of them is hardly offered at most cc’s in CA, which they don’t fault you on because they’re aware it’s not offered at most schools. The other 3 you can generally find at most schools. I’m very positive you can even find online courses for it at other schools too. It would be in your best interest to try to get it done. You don’t want to get denied and then know it was because of a class you were missing that you could of gotten done. Good luck!
I researched and finally found a CC which allows me to take only summer session online. I’m going to take it so that would be much better for my application. Thank you guys!

Yes I know that there are FOUR prereqs and one of them (Linguistics maybe) is hardly offered at CCs.
So now I’m gonna finish THREE of them.

For those who major in Anthropology:
Why did you choose this major? I’m just curious about that:)
I wanna study Claude Lévi-Strauss.
I got accepted into UCLA for anthro as well this upcoming fall. I chose to major in anthro because I realllly loved the linguistics class I took and I regularly get a chance to chat with a linguistics professor and he also really made me passionate about it. Although I do plan to try and switch to the joint ling/anthro major or ling/cs majors offered if they allow me to. If not, I figure I could always get a master’s in ling down the road. I know, the ling class seems hard to find. I took the course and I’m not even sure if mine articulates. The same course I took (same course name, same course number, same book even) at a CC in my same district transfers, so I’d probably have to have a little discussion with ucla to see if it really transfers over or not considering it does for another CC according to assist.
