UCLA Art / Design & Media Open House Invitation

I get what you mean @sarcappuccino UCLA will always be UCLA. But SDSU is indeed a great school. Thank you and good luck as well!

hey guys i’m a transfer applicant for DMA as well. I never got an invite but I’m hanging on with a sliver of hope that I could still get in. Anyone still want to check each others’ portfolios and talk about them? I’m willing to!

@artfreak0 yea me too lol. I honestly put together my portfolio super last minute because I had a lot of things going on and I don’t even remember what I put in it or if I even saved it somewhere. I didn’t get to spend a lot of time on it though (I remember working on a couple of the prompts right up until the last hour of the deadline) so it’s not that impressive.

@sarcappuccino Oh ok. I heard that some students had a decent portfolio (not the best but still good) and somehow got in. I’m just afraid that I didn’t have a lot of variety in mine because they’re mostly graphic designs. I regret not experimenting with different materials but I did what I could at the time. For the prompts, it was just describing the color right? I don’t really remember anything else… ?

@artfreak0 honestly that’s the thing I’m hoping for. The fact that there were some applicant that had decent portfolios and still got in since mine wasn’t really a “killer” portfolio. I’m an art major and most of my stuff are school works. I really dont have much personal works yet.

@adreezybones I’m just so glad I found this thread with people in the same situation as me. I thought I was the only one who didn’t get an invite to open house and these rumors about “informal acceptances” are driving me a little insane to be honest. The thing about these portfolios is that they’re subjective and everyone is at different levels so it must be tough on admissions officers to judge who to accept… Gotta expect the worst and have backup plans you know?

@artfreak0 honestly when I found out that people started getting invitations and I got left out, it hit me kinda hard and got sad for a few days. But now I’m like whatever. If I get in then FYeah, but if not, it’s alright. I mean I got accepted to school with great art programs anyway already (although theyre still not UCLA. Lol)

You’re right, there’s not a lot of information as to what exactly they are looking for in a portfolio. You just got to go all in no matter what.

But wherever you’ll end up dude you’ll be fine because that’s where you are meant to be exactly.

@artfreak0 I didn’t realize that some students with “decent” portfolios got in. I don’t really want to get my hopes up though because I’ve already accepted my rejection as soon as I submitted my application haha. But did UCLA art admissions say they didn’t want to see graphic design things? I worked on everything last minute and to be able to finish the prompts (I think color and another one was like a self-portrait thing?), I just did them in Illustrator so they’re mostly graphic design. I might have forgotten to include some more traditional artwork I’ve done (can’t remember) so I hope that doesn’t hurt me.

@adreezybones kind of off-topic, but I really like your profile picture!! I don’t know if you painted it, but it’s beautiful

@sarcappuccino The whole “decent” portfolios is just a rumor from someone that I read about from another thread. On their website, I’m pretty sure it said we can submit a range of mediums (traditional and/or digital) because they understand that we haven’t learned how to work with advanced programs/projects yet. But one thing that stood out to me was that they’re looking for more concept-based/theory artworks than just “pretty art.” So, I tried gearing some of my pieces toward that but it’s probably not what they’re looking for. My self-portrait is pretty cheesy now that I look back on it. There are some strengths and weaknesses but they’re probably looking for the overall effort.

@sarcappuccino thanks dude! I painted it and just finished it last week. I tried replicating Woman with A Hat by Henri Matisse. Not perfect but it’s hard to replicate a masterpiece. Lol

I cosign on what @artfreak0 said, I just read that on another forum too about decent portfolios being able to get in. I just forgot where exactly though.

This thread ?

@artfreak0 oh dang I don’t think I did anything conceptual other than the prompts. I’m sure your self portrait is amazing! I don’t even remember mine which says a lot haha

@adreezybones I love the painting! I’m in an intro to painting class this semester and even though my grade in it is good, painting is definitely not one of my strengths, especially since I’m so impatient with oils. I realized how much respect I have for painters and sculptors this semester after taking those courses because they’re so difficult lol

Thank you! I appreciate it! I work with acrylics mostly since I would choke out from all the chemicals needed for oil painting (I only have a tiny room) well every artist have their own medium/media that they good at. You must be good with digital art (thus applying for DMA) while I suck at it, really. Lol. My main problem as an artist is that I dont have my own identity yet as most of my stuff are very very technical. @sarcappuccino

@adreezybones I completely feel you on that! The thing with digital media is that trends are constantly evolving which isn’t helping me find my own artistic style/identity. But when we all finally transfer, we’ll grow as artists and find our identity!! Also, the greatest painters of all time began with great technical skills, but they evolved into their own personal styles that made them stand out, so you’ll turn out the same way!

Yes! That’s why the next 2 years of our study will be crucial in the careers we are gonna end up pursuing. @sarcappuccino

Is there anybody who gets in?

@jjoopbbi I didn’t, but I expected that since I didn’t get an invite for the Imagine event. Did you get in?
