UCLA Art Major

I'm an OSS contemplating applying to UCLA as an art major but I haven't completed any of the pre-reqs. Is it pretty much impossible to get in based off my portfolio, strong essays, and good grades?

You must complete pre-reqs.

I can’t complete them. I will have completed all of my gen ed pre-reqs but not my art ones. Is it pretty much pointless to apply then?

why can’t you complete them?

I go to a cc in Washington right now and some of the classes aren’t available here. I’m also going to be transferring to a CCC which means I’ll be going from the quarter system to the semester system so I wont have time to finish my core classes and my pre-reqs. I could finish them off during summer semester but I’m not sure UCLAs stance on summer credit.

I don’t think you need to complete the pre-reqs. You’ll get in based on your portfolio, I’m pretty sure

Thanks, that’s what I’m really hoping for. On the arts admissions site they say that you’re judged on the creativity of your portfolio and academic achievement which leads me to believe that the pre-reqs don’t hold as much weight as for other majors. Here’s to hoping!

^ No, the art page specifically states that the portfolio is a supplemental application. The thing about art (and other performing arts, whatever) majors is that… you have to be competitive even before you submit your supplemental. And even if it’s only based on portfolio, with a 14.65% admit rate I wouldn’t take that chance.

Find a way to do it. Take classes at another close-by community college or extra classes at the school you’re going to.

Or if you want a straight up answer, email the dept. head.

It is a supplemental but it also says that the portfolio is a significant part of the admissions process. I did e-mail them yesterday so we’ll see. Hopefully it works out. I feel like it might be worth a shot to apply.
