Hey guys, I'm a senior in high school currently preparing my apps and portfolio. I want to major in painting/drawing then later getting a MFA in Graphic Design at an art school. But first I'd like to experience a normal 4-year college, and I'm very interested in UCLA and USC's art programs.

The thing is, my GPA/SAT are pretty low compared to the average figures of admitted students at UCLA or USC. However, I've heard that the portfolio holds a lot of weight in the admission process for these two schools which is why I'm interested in applying to them.

Resident of CA
Total GPA (W): 3.71
Total GPA (UW): 3.6
SAT: 2040
SAT II: Chinese w/ Listening 780
AP: English Language 5, Chinese 5, Psychology 4 (planning to submit my AP Art Studio portfolio this year as well)

I've won a couple art awards (1st/2nd place, honorable mentions, donator award), 150+ hours of community service, been playing piano for 11 years (passed Level 5 ABRSM theory and practical exams), held leadership roles in youth group and school clubs, and have been involved in several art projects outside of school.

If I write really profound essays/personal statements and submit a portfolio that showcases polished technical skills and creativity, would I have a shot at those two schools despite my low GPA? Thanks for reading!
