UCLA? Berkeley? Harvey Mudd?

Im in urgent need of help because I need to make my decision quick like everyone else. Im deciding upon these three schools: UCLA, UCB, and Harvey Mudd. Ive visited all three and liked all three. UCLA was more fun and comfort zone. UCB was more of a "new" college atmosphere. and Harvey Mudd was a quiet, safe, "study" environment. The financial aid is Harvey Mudd is offering me the most money for first year (not guaranteed for next few years), Berkeley and LA are giving me some. I want to go into Premed (PsychBio, Biochem..) Which school would be better for me???

I would say that they’re all excellent schools. But for premed, I would say Berkeley is the more favorable choice amongst the three as it’s not as rigorous as Mudd’s going to be and has a slightly better percentage of students accepted to top med schools.

The next best option here would be UCLA.

Thank you. So Berkeley would be best out of the three despite that LA has the medical center/hospital available (or does it not even help for undergrads?).?

What scholarship did you receive at HMC?

I don’t think HMC is the best school for premed, considering the grade deflation and lack of medical opportunities.

As far as I know, UCLA medical school does not not practice inbreeding. And I think there are as many Berkeley undergrad at UCLA Med School as there are UCLA undergrads. Or if UCLA has bigger representatives at UCLA Med School, the lead was insignificant. However, there was a substantial lead of Berkeley undergrads to UCLA undergrads at UC San Francisco med school.

I once saw the published data of UC schools’ performances in med school acceptance rates and Berkeley was leading on the list. Sadly, I cannot find the site at the moment. But I’m sure its just somewhere on the UC site.

Why isn’t HM’s scholarship a 4 yr deal? I would opt for Cal. But I would have seriously considered Mudd if everything was equal.

I don’t think UCLA really has an edge over Berkeley in terms of getting into medical school. I would go where you think you’d be happiest between UCLA and UCB. If Mudd is comparable in terms of money, go there if you think you’d really be a fit.

I have read here that UCLA and Berkeley are about equally good at med school placements. Berkeley has an advantage in prestige and course rigor, while UCLA has more research projects available because of the extensive UCLA affiliated medical complexes (adjacent to campus, Santa Monica, Harbor, etc.). While Berkeley’s % placement is better, UCLA has about twice as many premeds applying, and one would assume that inasmuch as you were accepted to Cal and Mudd also, you will finish at UCLA in the top half of its med school applicants.

If money is equivalent, go to the school you feel most excited about.

Harvey Mudd is giving me the HMC scholarship of about 30k. and then i have the cal grant, pell grant and different loans. Total aid including loans&federal work study is about 50K… Everyone keeps telling me that Harvey Mudd is for engineering, not really for premed. Is this true??? So Berkeley and LA would be better in premed than Harvey Mudd???

ajandy… I don’t think Mudd is less good for premed the cal or ucla … it is simply OUTSTANDING for engineering, as in top 5 in the country. 75% or so of those admitted to UCLA south campus or Berkeley sciene/enginineering are not strong enough to get accepted to Mudd.

You should ask this of Mudders http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvey-mudd-college/

I did not know Mudd is giving you $30k until you just posted it… in that case Mudd is an compelling choice.

The problem with Mudd is that it is a science/engineering school. I’m sure it’s good for premed, but you are sort of stuck with science/engineering. Berkeley or UCLA would give you a lot of options, in case you choose to change your emphasis. I think the real question is how sure are you that is the path you want.

Just go with your instincts.

I think Harvey Mudd is a great option and you should really conisder it. I think that overall it will be the most beneficial preparation for med school than the others. It’s a tougher school no doubt but to me that makes it not only more prestigious but also looked more highly upon for as a feeder school.

University of California- Los Angeles

If you enjoyed UCLA more than UCB then I would say go to UCLA. For medical school applications it probably wont matter much whichever UC you went to, and you could possible do some work at the med school itself to give yourself an edge.

As far as Mudd, coming here for Premed is a bad idea. Grade deflation is the biggest reason. But also note that you will have to take a lot of classes that wont benefit you on your medical track, such as special relativity and high level mathematics.

Note - the “Harvey Mudd Scholarship” is need based, since some people were confused as to why its not 4 years recurring.

Premed programs are usually better at universities that are bigger and have more resources. I’d go with UCB over UCLA, but both would be great.

Sometimes it is very valuable to try someplace new for your college, so that way you aren’t already bored with what will be your home for most of the next 4 years.

Thanks to everyone that helped out. This was really bugging me. But I just chose Berkeley because
Harvey vs Berkeley

 1. Harvey Mudd’s grade deflation scared me too much (not that Berkeley is easy) esp because I know I need a good GPA for med school
 2. Berkeley will offer me more choices opposed to Harvey Mudd if I decide to drop out of premed
 3. PPl told me that Berkeley would be better for premed than Harvey even though Harvey is really prestigious and top 5 for engineering

LA vs Berkeley

 1. LA seems like too much of a comfort zone and I don’t think i would be able to escape my bubble (I live in SOcal and go to LA every weekend for church)
 2. I get to grow and be more independent if Im far from home
 3. Cause my Asian family would prefer Berkeley
 4. Berkeley seems to offer more research…

Yeah…basically. I kind of turned my SIR before I would change my mind again. Hopefully I will not regret my decision and really nicely, if possible, I would really appreciate if people would support my decision so that i know i did the right thing (cause I still feel a little shaky…) Please leave a comment or so to relieve me that I made the right decision. Thanks everyone once again.

^ You just made the right choice!

Enjoy Berkeley. :)

ajandy… having read some threads on the Mudd board, I would agree with your decision. A couple of Mudders said flatly that it is not a great choice for a person set on pre-med.
