UCLA + Berkeley

I will be attending community college next year and hope to eventually transfer to UCLA or Berkeley. What should I do to ensure that I have high chances of being accepted at either one?

Pre-req completion cannot be emphasized enough (I wasn't told this and am really stressing about admissions now because of it!)

IGETC completion

Keep that GPA as close to 4.0 as you can.

If you plan to do a few extracurriculars, the best ones to do are those related to your major or career plans.
Best of luck! :)

Well, you have to give us a little more than that if you want help.

Intended Major?
Do you need to work?
Any special cases (veteran, disabled)?

Major- My intended major is political science.
Work- I have a small part time job.
Special cases- None really.

"2. IGETC completion"

Excuse my ignorance, what is IGETC?

If your school has an honors program and participates in the Transfer Alliance Priority aka TAP take it and it will help you a lot to get into UCLA. Berkeley also uses honors courses taken as factor in their admissions. Berkeley also has the Transfer Alliance Project also but you have to meet certain qualifications to be in that program. But if you qualify then you should definitely join. Also look for leadership experience if possible for your ECs. And it really helps if you are not applying to a very competitive major.

IGETC is your general education requirements.

IGETC=Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum. Basically, your general education courses.

Look to this website to see which courses at your community college fulfill each of the categories...
Welcome to ASSIST

IGETC is a guideline of courses you can complete in order to strengthen your transfer admission to UC/CSU.

Poli sci is impacted, very impacted.

To put you over the top, I suggest you go for internships, community service, club president, etc etc.

Also a 4.0 would be super. Complete TAP for UCLA and all pre-req's for both UCLA and UCB.

Keep coming back here for help and study up on your future course catalog. Take summer school this year and any other sessions possible. Plan out your academic schedule for the next two years to make sure that you complete the IGETC, pre-req's, TAP (not necessary, but if you want to do it), and that you have 60/+60 semester units (or 90 quarter units) in order to transfer.

Good luck!

p.s These are the stats of applied and accepted Political Science students to UCLA Fall 2007
about 56% accepted. applicants had an average GPA of 3.36. Accepted transfer students had a 3.56 GPA.

Don't worry so much about the pre-reqs that aren't offered at your CCC. The UCs will understand that it isn't your fault for being unable to complete all of your pre-reqs. However, you should try to complete all the pre-reqs that are offered at your school.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I really appreciate it :).

Another question, could I sign a TAG thing with Davis as a back-up option and still apply to UCLA and Berkeley? Or is that forbidden?

Not at all forbidden. You can sign as many of these agreements as you like.

You can complete a TAG as a back up. But to tell you the truth chances are you won't need it to get into the other schools.

i was told by my school that you can only sign one agreement so to choose wisely. did i totally get lied to??

There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this board who will set me straight if I'm wrong but I do know that counselors are (generally) idiots.

i must say i think agree w/you. they were not helpful but they were the ones that had the agreement so i couldn't very well have said "hey you suck, can you sign my agreement now?" haha that'd be funny.

how much weight is put on pre-reqs being done before applying(both UC and OOS)?
most application dates are stupidly after only 1 year of college

I have 0 pre-reqs done, and only 1 summer before application date (i planned on taking pre-reqs sophmore year)

this sucks. *** can i do.
