UC’s including UCLA use only 10-11th grades in the a-g course requirements to determine your GPA so your HS weighted GPA is most likely not accurate. You need to wait until end of Junior to calculate your UC GPA. UCLA uses UW UC GPA, Capped Weighted UC GPA and Fully Weighted UC GPA in their admission decisions.

Here is the calculator: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

UCLA should be considered a Reach school for all applicants due to the # of competitive applicants (over 100,00 yearly) and their low acceptance rate.

UCLA Freshman Admission Criteria:

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores

  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience

  • Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence, AP/IBHL exam scores

  • Note: GPA, test scores, course work, number of and performance in honors and AP courses most important. Essay considered. Strong senior program important. Extracurricular activities, honors and awards also reviewed.

For the College of Letters and Science, the applicant’s major is not considered during the review process. The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science admits students by declared major, with more emphasis on science and math programs. The School of Nursing also places more emphasis on science and math programs and requires the submission of an additional supplemental application. The School of the Arts and Architecture; Herb Alpert School of Music; and the School of Theater, Film and Television admit students by declared major (within the school), and put more emphasis on special talents through a review of portfolios and/or auditions, which are the most significant admission factors for these schools.

Below are the 2018 stats for admitted applicants for UCLA so this will give you idea of target UC GPA capped weighted and SAT/ACT scores:

2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCLA: 4.23

2018 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCLA: 1340-1540

25th - 75th percentiles for ACT:
UCLA: 31-35

My advice is do not get hung up on one particular school especially one like UCLA which is a Reach.

Formulate your college list starting by identify 2 safety schools (affordable, guaranteed admission and where you will attend). From then, look for several Match/Target schools and then complete your list with a few Reach schools like UCLA.
Continue to work hard in HS. Take a rigorous course load but make sure these are classes in which you can do well in with A’s and B’s. Find some EC’s of interest and purse these showing leadership and commitment. Lastly make sure you know your college budget and sit down with your parents on how much they are willing to spend each year.

Best of luck.
