UCLA BusEcon&Math/Econ

Greetings,

I am planning on applying to transfer to UCLA on the next go around. I am looking at either the Business Econ, Econ, or Math/Econ major. I saw the average GPA for acceptance was 3.82(around there). I have a 3.68cum(not sure on xfer gpa) I am just wondering if the Math/Econ major is comparable. I know it is run by the math department, but would I still be able to apply at a top school for my MBA.

If relevant I have worked at a Fortune 20 TELCO as an Analyst(full time) for the last 3 years while doing school part time. I haven't done the required courses for TAP. I would be coming from Santa Barbara City College.

Another question I have: with all of my work experience, would I need 2 more years after receiving my B.A./B.S.(Math/Econ is a B.S. I saw)? Or is my time as an Analyst at the TELCO acceptable?

Thanks everyone,
-s

TAP is a requirement…

Complete it.

You need TAP to get accepted for Econ at UCLA? I didn’t think it was a requirement.

It’s not it just gives you a better shot.

Math econ is easier to get into. It is a BS. Math skills are looked upon highly doe any MBa program

Biz Econ is economics with accounting classes. Easiest pre-reqs, lowest acceptance rate.

Econ is mostly general economic theory plus a few electives (urban, environmental, political, international, etc). Medium pre-reqs, medium (still impacted) acceptance rate.

Math/Econ is a math major with economics classes. Hardest pre-reqs, highest acceptance rate.

thanks for the input everyone,

in regards to TAP, that’s for when you complete honor’s level classes right? or that’s what qualifies you for the program? correct me if I am mistaken, I’ve really only read about TAP briefly and primarily from posts on this forum.

^TAP It’s completing the honors program at your CCC if they offer it. It also depends on your CCC it can be anywhere from 15-18units to complete and may have to do other things (volunteer or special classes) Check with your CCC. Best to check your schools website.

TAP stands for Transfer Alliance Program, which is UCLA’s version of TAG, which stands for Transfer Admissions Guarantee. All UCs besides UCLA and Berkeley have TAG. UCLA has TAP because they won’t guarantee admission. As far as I know, Berkeley doesn’t have anything. TAP will significantly help your chances of being admitted, depending on the major you choose. For a non-impacted major, it essentially guarantees your admission. For an impacted major, it helps. For a severely impacted major, you basically need it to be considered.
TAP and TAG are contracts you sign that stipulate that if you meet certain requirements, your admission is either guaranteed (TAG) or significantly increased (TAP). It basically means you maintain a certain GPA, fulfill all your premajor reqs, and complete the honors programs at your school. The contract is different from CC to CC, because some schools don’t offer honors classes or every single premajor req.
Remember though, TAP/TAG doesn’t help as much as getting good grades and completing prereqs. I didn’t have TAP/TAG with any school, and I got into every school I applied to, including UCLA and Berkeley (though my major is not impacted).

haha you don’t need to be an econ major to get an MBA. If thats your ultimategoal do something more fun. physics!

Econ is an impacted major. I would really like to get into it. I think I have solid stats, but haven’t done TAP (and the honors classes they are offering this fall don’t align with what I need to take in order to transfer for Fall 2010). Bmop stated you basically needed it to be considered.
My question is this, When I apply to UCLA and UCB, will I get to apply for the Econ major and then also get the chance to choose an alternate major (maybe an unimpacted one) in case I don’t get accepted into Econ?

you can bump down from bizecon to straight econ at any time. to go from math/econ to normal econ you need at least a 3.9 gpa from the school you transferred in from.

you may also be able to go from straight econ to biz econ, not sure

i’m confident you can’t go straight econ to math/econ though

my ultimate goal is to work in the financial sector on wall street. I know I need a “name” on my degree to do what I want to do. I’m looking at schools for my MBA still, but I want to be able to go to a top program. I feel like UCLA is the next step logical step.

now here is the most important issue for me right now, I work full time… as an analyst at a fortune 20 telco(like I said earlier). I also operate my own LLC renting out servers and designing webpages(kind of a gimic but I could def talk it up). will that weigh in heavily for me?
if not for the full time work/school schedule I can only think of 1 class that I might have gotten a B in(teacher conflict). time becomes a huge factor when you have 1-2 hours per night to work through 4 classes and work projects.

The reason I ask is I can switch to part time, but I will be taking home 1/2 as much as I do now and job security worries arise, part timers are always the first to go. If they aren’t going to look at that too much anyways when they see my 3.7x GPA(crosses fingers) I will most certainly drop to PT.

[Santa Barbara City College](Welcome to Honors - Santa Barbara City College)

I’m applying tomorrow after my CALC midterm. I’m 1 math class behind if I want to complete all the math classes required for the math/econ major.

thanks everyone… I really appreciate all the input

I wanna major in Biz Econ too!!! but my gpa is around 3.7 so i might just major in econ because UCLA is my dream school…but I plan on to go to business school after…does it matter what degree you have in order to go to business school??? does your degree have to be business???

No you do not have to major in business to apply to business school.

UCLA’s Biz Econ program is NOT a traditional business major.

“The B.A. program offers a major for students seeking a business orientation in their study of economics. It does not replicate the traditional undergraduate business school curriculum. Instead, it offers a more tightly focused curriculum that is guided by the rigorous logic and integrative perspective of economics. It is designed to prepare students for graduate education in business, economics, and law. The program requires students to include specific courses offered by the department and the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management.”
