ucla business econ transfers READ!

I am planning on transferring to UCLA, majoring in Business Econ. The transfer requirements on the UCLA website say that you need 2 years of Calculus. I took pre-cal and AP cal in highschool, and subsequently do not need to take Calculus at my current college because I received a 5 on the AP test.

Here is what it says on the UCLA website:

Business Economics*

To be considered for this major, all of the preparatory courses listed here must be completed.

*two courses in calculus (from the math/physical science sequence)

It also says more requirements, but those are clear to me.

So the final question is,
Do I need to take Calc II to transfer into this major?

Thanks, and any replies would be GREATLY appreciated.

probably...

the thing I am wondering is, does Pre-Cal count as a course from the math/physical science sequence? that's why i wanted to know from somebody who has actually transferred.

thanks for your reply though, hobofromdowntown

I haven't actually transferred but If I were you, I would just take it

the two calculus course requirement is meant for UCLA students (or any other students on the quarter system), ie. Math 31A & 31B for UCLA consists of Cal I at a school with the semester system.

If I remember correctly, they're are two AP Calculus exam (AB & BC), depending on which exam you took, you will have met the 31a & 31b calculus requirement.

actually 31A and 31B is Calc I and Calc II

32A and 32B is Calc III

http://www.math.ucla.edu/undergrad/courses/math32ab/index.html

I think a 4-5 on Calc BC allows you to skip 31A, 31B, and a 4-5 on Calc AB allows you to skip 31A

Waiiiiiiit, I don't understand how one Quarter course would be equivalent to one Semester course. Then Calc 1 would be completed in one quarter at UCLA?? While it would be completed in 1 semester at any Semester school?
I got a 5 on Calc AB, but Calc BC was not offered at my school, so I guess I have to take Calc II(BC) next semester.
But does Pre-Cal count as a Calculus course?
Thanks for your replies, and if anybody else has any info please let me know.
:)

with a 5 on calc ab you will be skipping 31A

just look at

http://www.math.ucla.edu/undergrad/courses/math31ab/31Aoutline.html

thas Calc I

Although it sounds strange for 1 quarter of math to equate to 1 semester's worth, Citan is right about 31a as Cal I, 31b as Cal II, and 32a/32b as Cal III; I just checked the UCLA catalog.

Thanks for clearing it up...I'm gonna have to get my credits reevaluated

Yup, I looked it up on www.economics.ucla.edu and I have to take Calc BC. Next semester should be funnnnn :P This applies not only to BizEcon majors but general Econ majors as well.

talk to a UCLA counselour just to be safe..

As far as I know precalculus does not count towards the calculus requirment. They have two specific levels of calculus they want you to take. Precalc is only the prereq to these classes. Precalc would count towards your gen ed but not the calc requirement. You should look on assist.org for more info. I think if you took a class higher like calc 3 that would meet the requirement. That would of course mean that you had passed Calc 1&2 in one form or another.
