I'm interested in transferring to LA with business economics as my major, but I'm concerned because I get mixed messages from speaking to people regarding the program.

I'm unsure as to whether it's even a solid preparation for business because many people have said it's just an economics major with some accounting in there too.

How would you rate the program as a whole in terms of preparing one for success in the business world?

I’m going to be very direct with you guys, accountants off end up having more power in marketing firms than the marketers
financiers highly value accountants…
and an accountant can double as an operations manager as well…

I transferred to UCLA as a pre-business economics major but once I got to UCLA I did not maintain the GPA requirement to stay in the business economics major so I stuck with economics as my major.

From what I have seen, the business econ major (bizecon major) is pretty much just like the econ major with the requirement that you take accounting classes up to intermediate accounting and maybe a little more accounting than that. Also, you need to maintain a certain GPA in certain classes. You really need to do some specific mathematical calculations to see if you qualify. I did those calculations and because I got the grade of “C” in MGMT 1B, I was unable to qualify for the accounting minor or the bizecon major.

There are very specific requirements needed in order to get into the bizecon major from the pre-bizecon major. For example, I think you need something like a 3.3 in certain key accounting classes and an overall GPA of 3.3 or something like that.

I graduated with a 3.07 GPA from UCLA as a whole and I did not make it into the accounting minor nor did I make it into the bizecon major. My advice is that if you do get into pre-bizecon or into bizecon, make sure you get a high GPA and stick with the major!

I know a guy who majored in history but minored in accounting but he is now working for one of the big4 accounting firms making (probably) around $55,000 a year, his first year out of UCLA. He got recruited straight out of UCLA.

Sorry to ride onto this thread’s coattails…but just wondering from smith415. You were accepted as a pre-business economics major as a transfer? Does this mean that you did not fulfill all of the pre-major requirements before you transferred or there was a waiting period? I still need to finish the advanced english writing requirement since the writing classes from my UC somehow doesn’t satisfy the advanced writing requirement…

I believe “Pre-Major” is you are not declared full major until you finish rest of the lower-division major course that is only offered at the school.

So, even though you finish your IGETC and the list on Assist.org and you only qualified into Pre-major, that means you have to transfer over to UCLA and finish the rest of the lower-division course that is only offered at UCLA
