UCLA but not SD

Anyone get into UCLA but not UCSD?
Not that I'm saddened in any way, because UCLA astronomically beasts SD, but I'm just curious. Something is sketch about that.

“because UCLA astronomically beasts SD”
^ very debatable

But yeah, UCSD uses a comprehensive point system while UCLA uses a holistic review of the application.

“UCLA astronomically beats SD”?

really? necessary? grow up.

I spoke with a professor at UC Davis and he said general consensus amongst UC staff is that UCSD has now matched UCLA in terms of quality of education. Whereas it used to be a clear distinction between: 1st- Berkeley, 2nd- LA, 3rd- SD, it seems that SD has now blurred the line between 2nd and 3rd. Doing research on current rankings backs up this anecdotal evidence.

Do some research on potential universities next time.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I really appreciate it. Anyone know how to calculate the point system?

UCsandiego, thank you especially for your well-thought out, completely unbiased reply. I never said UC San Diego was a bad school, it is excellent. However, there still can be better schools that are more beastly.

P.S.-
I see that SD excels in teaching its students how to properly quote.

lol I don’t know what you were expecting saying it astronomically beasts SD in the SD forum, but regardless that’s very debatable as rypto said. Yea UCLA is typically more recognizable but let’s be realistic about how far they are academically.

Btw you really used the term “beasts”… really?

^^ agree with spacedog… what kind of reply are you expecting when you posted that (highly debatable and very sweeping) statement here? I think a more appropriate place would be the LA forum, for other people that got into that school, and not this one.

You guys are blowing this way out of proportion. I was joking around about the “LA beasts SD” thing. I do believe that SD is a great school.
But seriously, anyone have the same thing happen?

LA is NOT “astronomically better” than SD, not by any stretch of the imagination. LA simply has a bit more name recognition.

SD is FAR superior to LA in many areas, just as LA is superior in other areas. Neither is sweepingly “better” than the other. Ranking systems don’t do justice to schools that are already so evenly-matched, it is impossible to say wether LA is better than SD, or if Berk is better than LA, or if Yale is better than Princeton. They are all too similar academically.

My friend got in UCLA but not UCSD and I had a friend in a previous year got in UCB but not UCSD :P. It’s so unpredictable :(.

different schools are WAY better in different areas, so it may be because of your major as well.

i, too, am tired of hearing about how much ucsd sucks because it doesnt. claim it all you want (whoever) but ucsd is a freaking great school AND hard to get into, as we see here today.

Stop being so bitter and move on.

To the OP, UCLA has more name-recognition prestige than UCSD, which means the layman on the street will respect you more.

But if it comes down to a specific department, such as engineering, employers would recognize UCSD as equal to if not better than UCLA.

THe reason for the LA’s name prestige is that for a long time it used to be better than SD, but recently SD caught up, so now the repercussions of this catching up will take probably 5-10 years to register.

At the end of the day, you still got rejected.

Move on and start familiarizing yourself with UCLA’s forum.

You actually thought you could get away with saying that in the UCSD forum? Of course people will respond negatively; you were asking for you. I know people say we have no school spirit… but come on.

To answer your question: yes, it does happen. It’s not a rare event either.

Another one here, UCLA but not UCSD. I also got into Cornell ED if that means anything; I applied before my decisions came out. I was pretty confident, especially because they actually went so far as to use a “point system” and I was definitely within and beyond the range. I guess they don’t like my name or something. Congrats to all those who get in though, you should be proud of yourselves!

To the OP: nice try, as a general rule you don’t really criticize a school on its own forum, lol. Flamewar.

to OP:
how did you even get into ucla? dont they use the ‘holistic’ review of application?

lol look at collegeboard’s profile of UCSD:

[College Search - University of California: San Diego - UC San Diego - At a Glance](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

100% of the people were in the top 10% of graduating class, no other school has that

thats more evidence that UCSD admits you primarily based on class rank/sat, whereas UCLA/Berkeley use a more “holistic” process as most universities do

its weird though because UCSD only has 80% with a GPA 3.75+, most competitive schools have 90%+ GPA 3.75+ but dont have 100% in top 10%
