UCLA: Can you switch majors after applying?

Hi - I've already applied for a major in IDS at UCLA. Is it still possible for me to switch my major?

Depends on which major. I know for sure you can't switch into Economics.

If it isn't impacted (ie psych, pol sci, econ, bio, eng etc) then yes but you'd have to get all the pre-reqs done before declaring the major.

^ so if we want to double major, we would have to finish prereqs for the other major as well??

polisci isnt impacted, you can actually switch into that.

I believe Poli Sci is impacted but you can still switch into it.

Correction: Actually, im not sure how "impacted" it is, but i know its a fact that you can LATER switch into it if you dont like your major.

nancie: yes

how bout computer science is it possible to double major in computer science?
i applied as biz econ major

Look everybody. All of the crap that UCLA says that you cant switch into other majors is a bunch of bull. They just dont want people to misrepresent their major and switch once they get in and try to discourage it because they might have an overpopulated major if they let everyone do that. Once your into UCLA, you can contact the department of the major that you want to get into and they will let you know what you have to do to join.

subzero: where did u get that info.from?

@torrance: A UCB staff member that I know told me, however, I am pretty sure that if it applies to UCB it would also apply to UCLA, in my opinion.

subzero- no UCB and UCLA has different policy... UCB admit by department and UCLA admit by major so i heard UCLA is hard to change majors... you should ask UCLA staff member.

Subzero is right about UCLA in some ways.

You can pretty much go around any and all "policies" with the right approvals form department heads and the dean. Getting those approvals is another story though.

To double major you not only have to complete all the preqs for both majors, but you also have to complete two upper division courses in EACH major before they will update your DPR for a double major.

Um, i would have to disagree with subzero.

It is true that they say that to discourage you from switching majors.

But here is the truth: Most competitive majors that are NOT from the Econ dpt. (comm, psychology, etc) will allow you to switch majors, * with the idea that you apply a year after your acceptance . In essence, they want you to re-apply for admissions into their major, even if you have all completed requirements, just like everyone else. If you were not initially accepted into that major, you will * definitely** have an uphill battle to get acceptance into that major since they will base their decision on your UCLA gpa, not your CC grades.

All campuses make you declare your major on the first semester of attendance. If you have not met the requirements, you will not be accepted (and this is another reason why you are forced to re-apply a year later).

Technically (60-70% of the time), this move of majors will force you to graduate a year late.

i think anybody will stay in school an extra year if it means that they graduate with the degree that they ACTUALLY want though.
