The fact that you're from CA and first gen. will work in your favor. I think UCLA is match for you.

Study your butt off for the SAT1 and take it again. Try for a 1400 CR/M score and a 2100 combined score.

This will greatly improve your chances.

I know UCLA is a competitive school, wb555, but a 2100? It's not that competitive.

No ... being first generation mexican doesn't matter because UCLA or any UCs don't look at race as part of the application hence why UCLA is abundantly asian. Therefore I think you need to raise your SAT scores to at least 2150 to be competitively considered.

^^ to Cast. UCLA is one of the most competitive schools. Anything below a 2000 will not get you in unless you are a sports star or have a God given talent.

@zograscope: Really? I must have been looking at statistics by sports athletes. How would you rank the schools of the CA school system?

Well according to US News, UCLA is the #30 university in the WORLD and #25 in the nation. Most of the UCs, such as Berkeley (#36 world #21 nation) as well as UC San Diego and UC Irvine are all in the top 50. It is INCREDIBLY hard for students living outside of CA to be accepted into a UC system b/c there is a preference for students that live in California (which is why a few of my friends moved to CA for their senior year).

zoograscope,
That would have been terrible if your friends moved to CA and didn't get in. Talk about getting slapped in the face. Does it show anything about USC? Somebody from my school (I believe the only to be accepted into a school in CA last year) currently attends USC.

Let's get some facts in here between all the misinformation.

--While race is not considered, being first generation is. So is attending an under-performing HS, which is likely when someone is from Compton.

--Average SAT for accepted students at UCLA is 2050. They bend a lot for first generation though as a front page article in the LA Times demonstrated last week. The young Hispanic UCLA student had much lower stats than the OP:

The average UCLA freshman boasted a 4.22 GPA in 10th and 11th grades, according to the most recent data posted by the school, and De La Cruz had a 3.365 at San Pedro High when she applied. She got a 21 out of a possible 36 on the ACT college admissions exam, ranking her in the 48th percentile in California. She scored 380 out of a possible 800 on an SAT subject test, putting her in the third percentile nationwide.

For an illegal immigrant, getting into UCLA was the easy part - Los Angeles Times

I think he has an excellent chance given the overall picture and especially his class rank and community involvement.
