Can you chance my cousin for UCLA please? Basics for my cousin

These are her target schools: UCLA, UCI, UCD, Umich, University of Wisconsin-Madison, SDSU, University of San Francisco, Dominican University, Boston University, Umass, CSU east bay, University of San Diego, San Francisco State, San Jose State, Sac State

She plans to major in asian american studies or philosophy

What are going to be her safety, match, and reach schools?

PS -if anything is unclear, feel free to ask! Thanks again!

I don’t think her ethnic background falls under URM, but even if it did, she doesn’t get an official bump up in admissions for that at the Universities of California (UCs).

Weighted GPA is about (perhaps a little below) average for UCLA, but the upward trend is a good thing.

The test scores are a bit below average; would recommend trying to improve them. The ECs seem good.

My assessment
UCLA-reach
UCI-match
UCD-match
UMich-reach
SDSU-safety

I wonder why your cousin didn’t get into SDSU already. People with high test scores and high GPAs got accepted early at m

She should be able to get accpeted by all CSUs and University of SD. But, she does not have strong SAT2 subject test scores and AP scores that validate her strong GPAs. UC does not require SAT2 this year, so maybe it does not matter much. But, at this moment, the apps are out already, stay calm to wait. Good luck!

bump…

I agree with phospolipase that UCLA is a reach for your cousin.
Same reason, SAT 2 test scores are not that high to prove the rigor of classes taken.

I also agree with phospolipase, except that I think Michigan would be a match.

Michigan has become about twice as competitive in the last two years, and is only going to continue doing so. She might get in, but I think this is a reach.

with an average GPA of 3.8 and an average SAT score ranging from 1990-2200 Michigan is on the way to being more selective. The acceptance rate is 51% though, and with the OP’s cousin’s stats, it’s safe to say that Michigan remains a very good match.

Take a look at this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1271507-new-common-data-set.html

This year’s acceptance rate is down to 40%. Next year’s rate is likely going to be lower than that. If the OP’s cousin was applying a couple years ago, I would say it’s a match or a safe match. This year, or next year, it might get more complicated.

It’s also generally more competitive for out-of-state applicants as well, though I can’t find a breakdown to back this up.

Thanks for the new stats. A 40% acceptance rate is better than preceding years. But IMO, a 40% acceptance rate is still high enough to make it a match if she applied this year or next - again her stats are very much in place for Michigan. Her stats are also good/“meets the average” for UCLA or Cal, but with their 20-25% acceptance rate, I think it would mean that only 1 in 5 or 1 in 4 students with the same stats/higher stats get in, which would make them reach schools. That’s just how I view acceptances though, as I don’t really have the data to back it up.

As for OOS applicants, isn’t it right that Michigan is also looking to add more OOS admits because of diversity/economic reasons and has been a pioneer of accepting more OOS applicants in the past? Not sure about this.

IMO, these are the schools that closely match Michigan’s acceptance stats and are therefore “matches” for OP’s cousin:

NYU, BC, Brandeis, UCSD, UCI

Michigan has definitely more prestige (comparable to the top publics) indeed if compared to Brandeis, SD, and I and it’s high acceptance rate makes it so alluring as a safety for Ivy league bound applicants, which is sort of unfair for Michigan.

It may take a few more years for Michigan to get down to the 25-20% acceptance rate it should have. As for now though, and maybe next year, Michigan remains, to a lesser extent, a “safety” for ivy-bound applicants, and a “match” for people with OP’s cousin’s stats.
