I am in my second semester of my jr year and i am not feeling too good about my grades last semester. I have gotten straight a’s the first two years of hs except for maybe 2 b’s. the first semester of jr year i got:
advanced band-a
ap us history- b
ap stats- b
ap english- b
honors pre calc- c
ap chem- c
i hate that i ruined my good grade streak with only one a and 2 c’s! this semester i am getting all a’s so maybe that will make up for it? i am also studying extra hard for the sat and i have a lot of volunteer work and ec’s under my belt. do you think the 2 c’s i got will greatly affect my chances of getting into ucla?
Two C’s on your transcript, is not good especially for a Top Tier UC, but you never know unless you apply next year. There are many other schools that you should consider besides UCLA where 2 C’s will not be as much as a factor. Work hard the rest of the year and turn things around. Here is the Freshman profile for 2014 to see how you stack up. Remember GPA is only part of your application. Test scores, essays and EC’s will all contribute to your chances. Good Luck.

will they consider that i got the c’s in honors/ap classes? maybe i can retake them over the summer and raise my grade.
I do not know your HS’s policy, but most will not allow you to retake a class that you have already passed ©. I would check with your Guidance Counselor to see if it is possible. All schools like to see that you challenge yourself and take a rigorous schedule, however; they also like to see you get good grades in those classes. If you have a reasonable explanation for those 2 C’s, it can be addressed in one of your UC essays. With the huge amount of applicants that UCLA receives each year and their low acceptance rate, you need to have the best possible grades, SAT/ACT scores, Essays and EC’s to give yourself a decent chance for an acceptance. You also have to be willing to not focus on one school but give yourself a chance to see the other possibilities out there. All you can do is your best and sadly sometimes that is not good enough. Hang tough and I am sure you will end up at a great school. For now, consider UCLA a High Reach school and go from there.
Thank you. If not ucla, i hope i will end up at another uc.
