Senior Year (Projected Schedule)
AP Comp Gov
Senior English-(NOT TAKING AP LIT)
Advanced Calc
Ap Chemistry
Cisco networking (2 classes)
My school is very good public high school and offers maybe around 30 Ap classes
I passed on a lot of AP Classes, which I feel is my biggest problem in getting to UCLA. I want to apply as an engineering major, so I did not feel the relevance in taking AP classes such as AP Lang.
Tests:
ACT 33
English 30
Math 36
Reading 32
Science 35
Writing 31
SAT Math II 800
SAT Physics 800
ECs:
-robotics (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) will be a programming mentor/co-lead for incoming freshman
-NHS (sophomore, junior, senior)
-Key Club (sophomore, junior, senior)
-table tennis club(junior, senior)
Going to get a job during the summer
140 hours community service at a local food bank
MY MAIN QUESTION IS HOW BIG OF A PROBLEM IS IT THAT I PASSED ON SO MANY AP CLASSES?
UC’s rank applications based on GPA>Test scores>HS rigor>Essays>EC’s. HS rigor will depend upon how you compare to your fellow classmates and schools like to see some passion in your interests, but even though you want to major in Engineering, AP Language will make you a stronger candidate.
You need to calculate your UC GPA and UCLA will use the capped weighted UC GPA and the uncapped weighted GPA (unlimited AP/IB honors credit vs 8 semesters for capped), so this is where the passing on AP courses may hurt you. Your test scores are outstanding.

Compare your stats to the Freshman profile from last year to see how you compare. You look like a competitive applicant based on stats, but your essays and EC’s will also impact your chances and it is too difficult to predict.

Definitely worth an application but be aware that as an OOS applicant, you will receive no FA and plan to pay $55K+/year to attend.
I wish you good luck.
“MY MAIN QUESTION IS HOW BIG OF A PROBLEM IS IT THAT I PASSED ON SO MANY AP CLASSES?”
Well, if you were unable to handle those ap classes, then there is no point in stressing over not taking them. It’s extremely hard for us to actually judge anyone’s chances but if your stats are within UCLA’s ranges then you have a good chance if your other things are good
The course rigior is IMPORTANT for top UCs. However, your stats are good enough to perhaps make up for that. I consider your chances as “High Match”.
@zachtan21511 Hi! I was admitted to UCLA for the class of 2020 for a Physics major and I’m also international from Australia.
I think you have a great chance getting into UCLA, but a lot depends on your essays. There’s going to be countless applicants with similar/superior tests scores and grades applying for the major you’ll be going for, so if you don’t have a specific engineering major in mind, either be strategic and apply to the least competitive major in the school of engineering (and easily switch at orientation), or give the admission board undeniable evidence of your passion for a more competitive major in the school of engineering through really good persuasive & narrative writing in your essays as well as linking your ECs to your passion for this more competitive major (e.g. robotics shows passion for mechanical engineering and computer science).
Feel free to message me if you want more specific advice/details about my admission profile.
@zachtan21511 if you’re applying into engineering is say your chances are low. Your extracurriculars are not impressive from an engineering standpoint. Robotics is cool but that’s lightweight stuff.
You should have taken every AP exam. A grade in an ap class is subjective but an ap exam score gives a good idea of your level of attenuation.
Also your gpa will need to be higher way too many B’s already try not to get any more. And you should have still taken ap English and those because it shows you’re well rounded AND remember even at UCLA engineers have writing requirements (plural!) too! Plus it would boost your gpa.
All in all because you’re out of state you have a slightly better chance but I’d say you have a 30 percent chance of getting in which isn’t bad for UCLA. So apply anyway. And please get more impressive leadership positions and internships
