That UC GPA is really gonna hurt you man.
38% of applicants within your GPA range were accepted at UCLA last year which makes it a Low Reach. Your GPA and test scores are below the average along with 90% of admits were in the top tenth percentile of their HS.
Your essays and EC’s could give you a boost but you need to have some solid Match and Safety schools on your list.
Good Luck.
Legacy status won’t help, since the UC App doesn’t ask about legacy.
@Gumbymom Do UC’s count 12th grade grades?
No, UC’s do not consider Senior year grades for admission purposes unless you receive a supplemental questionnaire where you can submit Mid-year grades. Senior grades are used to maintain your provisional admission and make sure you complete and pass your a-g course requirements.
@Gumbymom could you provide the source for the GPA range thing? seems interesting
Definitely at least a low reach with your act score. Are you OOS?
@SeinfeldFan1 Yes, I am OOS.
@10s4life Yeah, I meant economics.
@studyhard13 Hi! I was admitted to UCLA for the class of 2020 for a Physics major and I’m also international from Australia.
Based on what I’ve heard from my future peers and what I think, you will have a reasonable chance at UCLA. I’m going to be honest and say that your grades, scores and rank aren’t going to be among the strongest, but I think you’re quite a well rounded candidate and will pass most of their criteria for admission.
Now, assuming getting recruited through soccer isn’t a possibility, you need to make sure your admission essays / personal statements are very well written and clearly exhibit who you are, how you think, and what motivates you. Also, since UCLA admits people by major, you need to give the admission board evidence that you have a good reason to want to major in finance or whatever you choose. If you can’t come up with a sufficiently convincing argument as to why you should be admitted to a specific major (especially if the major is one of the more competitive choices), apply as an undeclared major and make sure you prove your intellectual flexibility in your essays and/or “additional information” sections. Even if you decide to apply undeclared, I would advise you to state a general area of academic interest and then provide convincing evidence. By evidence I mean link your desire to study/interest in something to your past experiences/awards/jobs/classes.
Finally, you should try your best to improve your grades, scores, and rank if you think you realistically can in the time you’ve got. Can you maybe take the ACT one last time? Or the SAT subject tests? A stronger (700 or higher) Math 1 SAT subject test score will go a long way to help you gain admission into most non-humanities majors.
I hope this has been helpful in some way at least. I did a lot of research myself when I was applying last year since I had to go through the entire application process without any help (other than financial) from anyone, so I’ve done a lot of thinking about chances/likelihood and how to improve chances. Feel free to message me if you want more specific advice/details about my admission profile.
