By some miracle I was admitted to ucla in a civil engineering major. However, I don't know how recognized the undergraduate program is. Do graduates earn jobs easily, or are employers not interested in civil engineers from UCLA?
Would I be better off pursuing architectural engineering at cal poly SLO?

im not very sure how recognized it is but last quarter us civil engineers has to take an "intro" class for only civil engineers, they had 10 speakers coming in to take about different job oppotunities in LA area, several of them are UCLA graduates and one of them was the VP of a pretty big company and we all know in LA alumni relations can get you a pretty long way in terms of getting jobs... in short employers, especially around LA area are still interested in civil engineers from UCLA, after all UCLA is just such a big name with big networks... and LA area has so much opportunities from transportation to environmental to structural engineering

Ummm.. graduates earn jobs pretty easily. The UCLA name gets you far, and LA county, LA city (two HUGE employers) really like UCLA, and it counts for more than SLO, because the competition here is much greater, and the incoming class is also more qualified. They also count a lot on personality. UCLA >>>> SLO

One more reason to go to UCLA:

If you're a girl, I tend to notice civil and environmental engineering has the highest amount of girls in engineering (Taken 4 UD civil classes).

I noticed also the ASCE is much like AICHE, majority of the officers are female.

If you're a guy, well be thankful girls are in your class, it could be worst, much worst (electrical comes to mind).

ASCE/Civil people I've talked to are pretty cool, not as stuck up as CS/EE.

thank you for all of your insight, it's greatly appreciated.

yay go ucla civil engineering :)

the asce ones are more manly

I resent that!

Don't know about you Moldau but the girls are pretty feminine to me, well the ones I've met.

As for the stuck up part, I think I will eat my words cause there are cool CS/EE. Every major has its bad and good so to speak. Just bashing on CS/EE because of the freshman who posted leaving chemical for EE, mindless thinking.
