^
somehow i have trouble believing that one.

and my son: rejected
4.4 weighted/3.7 unweighted (not sure about UC GPA)
SAT ~2100
IB diploma
mock trial
water polo
tons of community service, founder of a club that informed his intended major
community-wide awards
family hardship - dad has stage 4 colon cancer
… go figure …

I wanted to go to UCLA my whole life,
My dad went there and loved it.

With a 4.02 GPA, 2020 SAT, 600 & 640 SAT II’s and nearly two-dozen note-worthy extracurriculars (not exaggerating), I didn’t get in. Yet I’m seeing people here who got in with a 3.86 weighted GPA and a 1780 SAT, and their ECs are barely existent? And someone like the person above me’s son, with a 4.4 and 2100 SAT plus some ECs, DIDN’T get in?

I don’t know what system they’re using for acceptance, but it’s total bull*****. Ridiculous…

Sorry, athenisa - I know how disappointing it is.
Forgot to mention that he did a Summer Institute there too (Green Global sponsored by the Anderson Business School) and came home “sold” on UCLA. Loved the campus, the people, the dorms… everything! Oh well. Their loss, I’m afraid. (of course all moms think that… lol)

@coquimom and athenisa: How about the essays? Remember that UCLA takes the essays into consideration as well.

I have to say, my son didn’t let me see his essays. He insisted on doing everything on his own. I wonder if the kids with “paid coaches” got the brass ring in the end… ugh.

General Comments: Scholarship Recognition Award is estimated at circa 17k… so that helps me out. I think the two biggest factors in my admittance are my essays and the major I applied to. Could also be the fact that I have been in band for 4 straight years.

@athenisa

If it helps, I know some guy with 2300, 4.7 GPA and 800s on all his subject tests that didn’t get in. Though he did withdraw his music school app. and tried to get in on his 2nd major.

@conquimom

I’m definitely happy to get in… There were a lot of really high achieving applicants rejected for no apparent reason. I would be a walk on for the UCLA cross country and track team. The only way I would be able to go, as I am out of state, would be if I achieved an athletic scholarship after attending UCLA for a semester. We’ll see what happens. I can’t wait to meet all of you if I do end up attending.
