*******UCLA CLASS OF 2019 DECISIONS ONLY*******

Although my SAT was a 1620 lol

Denied via web site 3/20/15 8pm PT or so

Other
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Public

Accepted: UCSD CS, UCD CS, UCI CS, GA Tech CS

Reflection: I was surprised by the deny as I was on a roll with all UC’s and my desired major to this point. But I’m not too disappointed as I’ve been leaning UCSD anyhow as I prefer a quieter (other students call it “socially dead” ) environment. I also like the six college system at UCSD and the program through Revelle looks like a good match. It seemed like the UCLA Comp Sci program was also more pre-determined with less space for say language courses. Revelle expects all its students to be taking a language so that’s a good match too. I’ll either enhance my current spoken languages or try out a new one. It would have been preferable to be able to have another look at UCLA as another possibility. But all good.

After seeing the stats of the people who got in, I understand why I was denied! Congrats to you guys, you deserve this!

Volunteer/Community service: Service trip to Costa Rica where I spoke mostly only Spanish, tutoring
Personal Statement: My decision to switch schools and how I made the best out of that, tutoring a student and our connection and how I am proud of our relationship, taking AP Spanish and how that was extremely difficult but it made me realize my passion for Spanish

Weaknesses: Test scores
Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? Accepted into Northeastern, Santa Clara, Cal Poly and others
Schools you were rejected from? none…so far
Schools you are waiting for? USC, UC Berkeley

**General Comments:
I honestly thought I was going to be rejected because of my SAT and ACT scores, but I believe that my personal statements made my application very strong. There was clear correlation throughout my application between my passion for language and culture, which made me a strong candidate for my major, International Development Studies. Show that you are passionate about something and hopefully the admission people will feel your passion!

Decision: Accepted. School of Theater Film and Television

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2220. 800 writing, 790 cr. reading, 640 maths (to the best of my memory-- honestly can’t remember. only took it once.)
[
] SAT II: Did not take any.

[
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Scholar

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
[
] Job/Work Experience: I will be interning at Warner Bros this spring.
[] Volunteer/Community service: I have been a Girl Scout since I was four. I frequently volunteer in my community and have set up a program to care for the feral cats in my neighbodhood, as well as spread the word about low cost spay and neuter programs (i live in a relatively poor area of Manhattan). I am currently working on my Girl Scout Gold Award (comparable to Eagle Scout award) which involves making pillowcases for the pediatric hospital patients of Loma Linda University Hospital. So far we’ve made and delivered more than 300. I’m due to recieve my award this spring.
[
] Personal Statement: Talked about my mother’s strength after my father died when I was 13, and how her strength inspired me. Second essay was a narrative about how I fell in love with a girl on the subway and had to leave at my stop and she rode on. My additional comments section was a narrative about moving from Roswell NM back to New York City when I was 5, and a reflection on one of my first memories.

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yep. Got none :disappointed:
[li]** Intended Major **: Film and Television[/li][
] State (if domestic applicant): New York
[] School Type: Public HS in the suburbs of NY. Very well known and respected. In a very affluent community. I attend because my mother teaches in-district.
[
] Ethnicity: White/Hispanic
[] Gender: Female
[
] Income Bracket: 50k-100k
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Third-gen. UC student, with relatives on both sides having attended UCLA. [/li]
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: DEFINITELY my writing supplement and essays. My interview at TFT went really well and I brought them samples from my art portfolio, more writing, and a copy of a children’s book I wrote. I also demonstrated a lot of interest-- visited twice, attended on campus interview, despite how far away I live. My SAT scores are nothing to shake a stick at, either.
[
] Weaknesses: Definitely my grades! Ha.
[] Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to?: Accepted to Virginia Commonwealth University and UVM.
[
] Schools you were rejected from?: CalArts. They don’t know what they’re missing out on!
[li] Schools you are waiting for?: USC and Yale. Neither of which come anywhere near to how much I love UCLA. [/li][/ul]General Comments: Good luck all! I decided to fill this out because I couldn’t find anything online about the TFT program’s acceptances when I was applying. Here is, verbatim, what the interviewers told me: Out of 1500 applicants to TV/FFilm production, they interviewed 44. Out of those interviewed, they select their freshman class. As this is their second freshman class ever (previously junior transfer only), it’s hard to say how big their class is gonna be. I was told it doesn’t vary much from their usual number of 15. Unfortunately, if you aren’t called for an interview you aren’t going to be accepted. I got called to set up my interview on abt. Feb 1st, and actually interviewed on Feb. 14th.

Again-- good luck everyone! If any aspiring film kids for next year’s app cycle want to contact me feel free to! And if you’ve been accepted to TFT let’s talk! And sorry for any typos-- I’m on my phone

Reflection
I definitely did not know whether I was going to get accepted or rejected from this school. It was not considered a safe school, but one of the medium/harder schools to get into from my list (Although it is difficult to get into, period). I’m happy that I applied nonetheless. Since I got into Cornell, I wouldn’t have gone to UCLA whether I got in or not. If not for thatl, I would have been crushed to not get into here. I’m probably going to Cornell though  Congratz to everyone who have gotten in, it’s an amazing school!

Strengths:
Essays, Extracurriculars (but not amazing!), GPA, hooks.
Weaknesses: ACT scores, didn’t take or submit any SATs or SAT II.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Rejected probably because of my ACT scores and the okay essays didn’t help.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: University of Florida, University of California- San Diego, Emory University, Cornell University
Waiting on Acceptance notification: University of California - Berkeley, Stanford, UNC, Notre Dame, Northwestern, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, Rice University, USC.
Rejected: University of Texas - Austin
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Not really sure. Maybe the essay!
