UCLA Class of 2020 Applicant Discussion

I’m guessing decisions come out on March 18 at 5pm this year, since that’s a friday. which is probably when my other top 2 decisions are coming out… could be a great day or terrible one…

4.23 Thought I had an ok chance, but now that I’m seeing these I feel like I won’t get in because of pretty much no extracurriculars…
UC gpa 4.23 capped SAT 2240 one sitting
in state, top 4% of class of 556
AP bio-4 AP world history-4 AP US history-5 AP Calc AB-5 AP Art history-5
taking 4 APs this year and one honors. Took most of the hardest classes at my school, with 2 ap sophomore (limit is 2) 3 ap,1 honors, and 2 reg last year, one reg this year. (unweighted=3.9 weighted=4.38)
however, about 100 hours community service, president and founder of a club this year, link crew one year, JMUN one year, working with a local charity, member of CSF
worked for a summer at an accounting company, have tutored, and I work now at a company called CollegeSource that works with colleges (including UCLA, maybe theyll recognize the name?? >:D< )
I know, I’m not very committed to anything so i am hugely lacking

@acause how were your essays

also, for those wondering about the admissions process, the UCs use a point system. points for gpa, sat, community service, life-altering experiences, leadership positions, single parent, essay, etc. I have a list with the exact topics and points that a college counselor at our school gave us. (Of course, gpa and sat points are WAY more than the others) They change the minimum points according to the applicant pool every year. Berkeley and LA usually have around the same min points, while the rest of the UCs are lower.

not really sure. I know one of them wasn’t great, it was about the influence my grandparents and going to church all my life had on me. The other one, my english teacher thought was really good and he also helped me on it, it was about how I want to combine my two passions, volunteering and math, into my career. (However, I went in undeclared.)

anyone else get a mini heart attack when they get an email from ucla thinking it’s a decision…? cause i do :-S

@dashley What was this email about? I did not get anything today from UCLA. I only got email from UCB today.

@acause would you mind sharing the full list with us? do you have the point value for each category?

Nearly hopeless after seeing all your stats… I have a 1760 SAT and a 3.77 UC GPA. Not to mention this year’s applicant pool is even larger than last year’s, which means there will be even more students with outstanding and amazing test scores and extracurriculars…To make my chance slimmer, I applied as Design Media Arts major… arguably the hardest major to get into according to the transfer profile last year. I’m just trying to stay optimistic and hopefully, my essays and my portfolio will make up for my lack of academic excellence & participation in extracurricular. Good luck everyone!!!

Haha I saw the article saying 119k people applied to UCLA. Hopefully it’s good news for all of us. I applied for Electrical Engineering.

According to the UCLA article talking about receiving 119,000 applications for fall 2016 “UCLA will notify freshman applicants of admission decisions by April 1, and admitted students will have until May 1 to notify the campus of their intent to register”.

ahhhhh. about two and a half months to go. I CANNOT WAIT.

^ same. I am actually like having anxiety right now. I am so disappointed that UCLA received a record number of applicants this year. I thought that last year they had extra many people and hoped for it to go down this year, but nope. Even more people applied this year and average stats are significantly higher. I thought I had pretty good stats, but seems like I am now just the average UCLA applicant now. UCLA was really my first choice. I don’t have much hope anymore though, just a slim chance.

Not surprising that UCSD has more applicants than Berkeley. Berkeley is increasingly losing its popularity for it having the reputation of students there being extremely cutthroat and the campus being very dry. I know many people with a really good overall application but would rather go to SD than Berkeley (might be because I am from San Francisco, which is awfully close to Berkeley). I am pretty sure the average UCSD stats are significantly lower than UCB though even though they have more applicants, since students with low stats apply as well hoping for some luck to get in UCSD.

So anxious for March to come!!!

P.S. What are some things you guys do kill time while waiting for these decisions?

@vi0linmonster i’m watching ucla admission decision reaction videos, bruin day and move-in day videos so I can say I experienced it (well watched it) even if I don’t get in

Anyone here out out state? And should I start looking at UCLA scholarships even before admissions come out? I’m nervous about the oos price

@bostonliving9696 Yes you should start looking for scholarships as soon as possible. UCLA is expensive for out of state.
P.S I’m also out of state too.

If anyone has a minute or two!!!

I don’t think my chances are very good, however, I am applying to the Design Media Arts Institute which really only looks at the art portfolio rather than grades. When it comes to narrowing down applicants, thats when grades come in.

I am from a very good high school but no one from here has ever even applied to UCLA.

I also went there to do Model UN and Design Media Arts Summer Institute 2 years ago.

I don’t think my stats are that great, but I hope art pulls me through- if it doesn’t I will still be looked at for the main school so please lmk what ur thoughts are!

@livvrose98 Hi there! I have also applied to UCLA for the same major! To be honest, I think there is really no point of asking these “what are my chances” type of questions… Even if you have 2400 SAT and 5.0 GPA, there’s no absolute guarantee that you will get in. Similarly, having a 1600 SAT and a 3.0 GPA doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get in. All I can suggest is to put as much effort as possible into your application, stay confident, be patient and you’ll get your admission decision in late-March!

Like you said, DMA puts more emphasis on its applicants’ portfolios than it does on academics, so if you have an outstanding portfolio and meet the minimum requirements for UCLA, chances are you will get in!
