[
] Schools were you accepted/waitlisted to? University of Michigan and its music school
[] Schools you were rejected from? JHU, UCLA (lol)
[
] Schools you are waiting for? Vanderbilt (!!), UC Berkeley, USC, Oberlin, UMiami, Rice
[/ul]General Comments: When I applied to Vandy, this school, and JHU, I knew that I was reaching myself really far but I took the risk anyway. At the end of a day, if at these schools all that matter are freaking numbers to get in, instead of actually who the person behind those numbers are, then this is not a school I would like to go to. If I’ve learned anything from this is that “prestigious” schools just care about numbers and not the people just to continue their false marketing tactics. I’ll just have to wait what happens, I’m happy I got Michigan, it’s a school I really wanted although Vandy is my first. I know I shouldn’t bet on getting in too much though.

[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science Olympiad was the only big school related thing I did, occasional speech/debate in 9th and 10th grade, Shadowed a neurosurgeon, loved playing piano, and the school math team (very insignificant)
[ *] Job/Work Experience:Tutoring
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Ronald McDonald Charity House (helps families that have relatives in hospital) Break the Barriers (gym for people with disabilities), Research Volunteer (helping doctor with pulmonary research), Restore Habitat for Humanity (warehouse volunteer basically) and some small UNICEF soup kitchens
[ *] Personal Statement: Talked about how my family would move around a lot which didn’t fit with my personality since that made it very difficult to actually make friends. This led to me being a dismissive freshman in high school that didn’t buckle down and focus on many EC’s or team related activities since I felt insignificant. However, volunteering at Break the Barriers turned me around and taught me the value of commitment to an activity.

2nd essay was about my 1st experience tutoring and how I need to adapt my learning style into a brand new one for my student. Ended up with me increasing his grade and feeling pride that way.

[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.):
GPA HOLY SHIT. LIFE SAVER.
[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: GPA GPA GPA. I had an absolute boatload of AP classes and succeeded in them very well. Volunteering is probably the best category I have, but it wasn’t super crazy, along with a bit of research over the summer before my 12th grade year. Also I didn’t apply for engineering and was within top 20 of my class.
[ *] Weaknesses: Pretty much everything else? Test scores were really average compared to some other guys that I know, extracurriculars were so generic, the only one I felt like I actually cared about was Science Olympiad. Putting down Piano seemed kinda desperate but admittedly I do really care about it. I had 2 good awards, the rest were kinda lame imo, but on paper I suppose it looks good.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, GPA/rank, ACT composite
[
] Weaknesses: Honestly, I was surprised that I was accepted because I don’t seem like a very strong engineering-type student. I haven’t taken a very science-heavy course load (regular bio, regular chem, honors physics & AP comp sci), and none of my ECs are even remotely related to science or engineering. Also, my science ACT subscore was my lowest subscore by far, oops.

[
] Schools you were rejected from? JHU, earlier today…
[li] Schools you are waiting for? Boston U, Berkeley, Cornell & Penn[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congrats to all who got in! See you next year, maybe? And I’m really sorry to those who were not accepted… I know quite a few wonderful and brilliant people who didn’t get in, so just know it’s UCLA’s loss without you there. And good luck to those applying!! I hope my answers can be of help. I honestly struggled with the whole applying-to-college thing, so I don’t have much good advice. But remember that colleges don’t just want traditionally “qualified” students; they want students who are unique and passionate individuals, so try to let that shine through! Best of luck!!!

Reflection

Strengths: test scores, GPA, relevant and focused extracurriculars, strong recommendation letters
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: more towards Public Health than STEM-driven
Weaknesses: Asian. APs. Definitely should have taken more AP tests
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: rejected by Stanford and Northwestern, waitlisted by WashU

General Comments:
I feel overwhelmingly honored to be invited to the UCLA class of 2020. Through hard work, dedication and motivation anything is possible. My freshman year gpa was a 2.8 (Health reasons), although UCLA doesn’t factor in 9th grade GPA, I hope to be proof that intelligence and competence is measured not by stats and numbers, but by willingness and ability to follow one’s passions and one’s academic pursuits. Congrats to all accepted and blessings to those still searching for their home.

I thought I wasn’t going to get in because of my test scores, like honestly they’re a joke. I failed some AP tests, never gotten a 5, my SAT I is subpar, and what even are my SAT IIs? I’m also ASIAN, which I know the admissions people are going to be like oh we don’t take that into consideration, but on the real though…cough. Anyways, I just want to say that these things don’t matter as much as you think they do. If you put your all into your essays and really try to showcase yourself in the best way possible, you will be recognized for your effort. Congratulations to everyone who got accepted, and may everyone else be successful in their future endeavors!

Weaknesses: ACT, the fact that my application is just very average I guess?

Schools you were rejected from? Northwestern, Cornell (ED) and WashU + a couple of UK schools
Schools you are waiting for? UC Berkeley, UPenn, USC, NYU, Duke and Stanford (lol never gonna get in)

General Comments:
For years I would read College Confidential Threads and just feel despair about my future because I would see people with perfect ACT/SAT scores and perfect grades get rejected from my favorite schools and here I am with a 29 ACT score and shitty grades freshman and sophomore year with NO chance of getting in. I honestly never expected this and I’m overwhelmed. My biggest tip is to apply to as many schools as possible! Even if you feel like you’re below the average in terms of stats just apply! If you don’t apply you’re not getting in for sure so you might as well try and see what happens. Honestly, just apply to as many as possible, because there are so many factors that affect an admissions decision. When I opened my UCLA letter I had just received my Northwestern and WashU rejections and there was no doubt in my mind that UCLA would also reject me, but they didn’t! Look at my stats, they’re so below average. I’m not an athlete, I didn’t start a charity, I didn’t invent 8 apps, I’m not a musician, I don’t have perfect scores or grades, I JUST APPLIED! I studied for the ACT and the best I could do was a 29. I worked hard in school to get that upward trend with my grades, I did activities I was passionate about but that’s it. I’m not a superhuman, I just sent out a bunch of applications hoping at least 1 would be successful. Do the same! Just Apply. Congrats to everyone else who also got in!
