UCLA CLASS OF 2021 APPLICANT THREAD

I have a theory that lacks proof but nonetheless makes some sense. Do colleges like UCLA refrain from accepting too many students in close proximity because they think they might commute (and therefore the college loses money)?

@2girls2015 glad I could help! Bruin day is April 15 and it’s definitely a great event for admitted students and their families. You get to see the dorms, dining halls, and get to talk to students and teachers!

You have terrific stats; possibly your essays didn’t come across the way you intended, or one of your recommendations was lackluster? Or, it is just that random and competitive, and they can only take so many students or out of state students. There are several stellar kids at my daughter’s school who are waitlisted also. I’m astounded how much harder it is to get into competitive schools this generation. Don’t beat yourself up about it; hopefully you have other good options.

Sorry, that comment was meant for @imfat477.

@imfat477 Your record is incredible. There is just no explanation for how you could get waitlisted. You even took Organic Chemistry!

@imfat477 @JuicyMango poster also applied to Chemistry major and he got rejected without even getting waitlisted, and he had very good stats also, so kinda weird unless Chemistry majors need to have absolutely incredible stats. My kid, who has been accepted to Stanford REA and all other colleges so far (we will see about UC Berkeley decision), applied to a non-STEM major at UCLA and got rejected outright. Therefore, I find nothing surprising when it comes to college admission happenings. It’s a total crap shoot. You even come from Oklahoma which probably is an under-represented state. I can only say UCLA thought you would not be coming to their school and denied you. lol

@websensation Haha I’ll be honest with you, if I had gotten into UCLA, I’d probably not go. But that has to do with the distance, cost, and competitiveness of the school. I did recently talk to my counselor and I’m going to try to appeal for a different decision, so we’ll see.

I’ve always been more interested in getting into Berkeley (College of Chemistry), so maybe they knew that somehow :p?

@JuicyMango I know what you mean. Had my kid not been accepted to Stanford, and he got into UCLA and UC Berkeley, he would have gone to UC Berkeley over UCLA even though I liked UCLA campus better. Let us know if you get into Berkeley.

Housing choices (on campus dorms) – Maybe I should wait until we receives our packets in the mail, but checking it out on UCLA website ( https://housing.ucla.edu/my-housing/rates-contracts-rules/classic-residence-hall-double-room-rates-2016-2017 ) It doesn’t seem to state which meal plan is most common; and what is the difference between, say “14 P” meals (per week) and “14” meals per week (or 19P vs vs. 19 meals per week – just unclear what the “P” means, though there is a price difference.) But, @10s4life if it will be clear once we receive our packets in mail, then I can wait. Also, so most people get triples, but a few request doubles, right?

@JuicyMango , why appeal if you know you wouldn’t attend? IMHO the appeals process should be for students who were shut out of their first choice. It shouldn’t be clogged up with people who just want another feather in their cap.

@“xc&track-run” The ‘P’ indicates that unused meals can be carried over from week to week, although they have to be used by the end of the quarter. Meals on the plan without the ‘P’ do not carry over. From their site for the ‘P’ plans:

“Unused meals carry over from week to week and can be used at any time during the quarter for extra meals and snacks for you, your friends, or family. All meals must be used by the end of the quarter.”

@aquapt That’s your opinion, but I’m appealing because I don’t think it’s fair that applicants clearly less qualified are getting in. I still want to be able to have the option of attending if I do, by chance, fall in love with the school.

Do any UC schools send emails if you’re rejected or waitlisted? Or do they just send emails if you’re accepted?

Sorry @JuicyMango but I’m going to have to agree with @aquapt. You may not be happy with the results, especially considering some “less-qualified” got in, but appeals should be used for people whose top choice is UCLA. The admissions office is literally reconsidering your application on the assumption that, “Oh, this person really wants to attend.” I honestly don’t think it’s worth an appeal just to prove to yourself or whomever that you can get into UCLA. At the end of the day, it’s what you make of wherever you go that will give you more credit than acceptance to a highly competitive school. However, if you’re absolutely sure you want to potentially take an appealed spot from someone whose dream school is UCLA, by all means go ahead.

k then I won’t appeal…

@JuicyMango An appeal most likely won’t work. Only missing info or misreported info in the original app is really grounds for an appeal. If you wanted admission based mostly on stats you should have done engineering. L&S is hollistic engineering is points based Sorry you are unhappy

@xc&track-run 14p is most common. I have 19p and end up wasting a lot of swipes because I don’t use them. The best value is 19r. If you skip a meal you can make it up later that day at late night. Get 19r if you want the best bang for your buck. 14p if you want flexibility. 19p is you absolutely want 19 meals plus the ability two swipe 2x a meal period. I’m downgrading to 14p next year. Most get triples but if you request roommates (don’t go random) and have a double as your top choice then you may get a double. Triples aren’t bad though.

@10s4life Thanks for the info. A little bit too late, so I’ll have to move on to other schools then. A waitlist would’ve been nice though…

@JuicyMango - My friend got rejected from UCSD years ago and got in with an appeal. If you think there is even a slim chance you would go to UCLA and you don’t mind going through the trouble, I say go for it. Better to try now than regret later. Do what’s right for you!
