Q: IF I AM NOT ADMITTED UNDER MY FIRST CHOICE MAJOR, WILL UCLA REVIEW ME FOR MY ALTERNATE MAJOR?
A: Within the College of Letters and Science, the major an applicant chooses is not a factor in the review process at the freshman level. UCLA does not normally consider the alternate choices of applicants who applied to majors in the other schools (Engineering, Arts, etc.).
I remember seeing a UCLA document with something like this:
Freshman Admission - All majors in L&S are equally competitive. All other colleges have supplemental applications. Alternate major is rarely considered and only for engineering (first choice and alternate must both be in engineering). The campus uses holistic review and is academic achievement oriented.
Ah well. Thanks, @Gumbymom and @splp12345 . We should have done our homework in more depth before choosing; we naively assumed that if two majors could be chosen, then two would be considered. She should have just gone for Ling+CS, in retrospect; and it will quite likely mean a denial… but fortunately she doesn’t have her heart set on UCLA. If someone who is more invested learns from this thread for next year, then my work here is done.
@marshmallow24 From my understanding, that is their target enroll amount, not how much UCD actually accepted. And If UCLA is going for roughly the same amount as last year, then I’m thinking around 17,000 admits
@aquapt@Faultystart 2 years ago, my D was also debating between these two majors and chose CS for the same reason. She didn’t get the alumni scholarship invitation, but received the engineering likely letter; she was eventually admitted to the CS major. Good luck to both of you!
@“Wilt Chamberlain” Are you a tr0ll or something? You have multiple posts with different stats. You went from “well off korean male” to “poor latina female.” Now you keep pestering about how to afford a school when you’re instate…
@splp12345 , did your D attend UCLA, and if so, did she stay in CS?
Haha, @Faultystart , I stalked your chance thread and see that you’re also a Northeastern EA admit… and “hapa” as well. Looks to me like your prospects are excellent at a lot of schools that would come out ahead of paying OOS tuition for UCLA. Just stressful to be waiting out so many decisions. Good luck!!

What are the chances of getting in if you got the invitation to apply for the Regent’s scholarship? A lot of people are saying it means you are a well qualified applicant, but is it a for sure thing? Does anyone know of anyone who got the Regent’s invite and then was rejected?
@splp12345 thanks! I noticed in the second link it mentioned that a lot of people didn’t differentiate between the Alumni and Regents when they said they were rejected though. Ahhhh oh well. Fingers crossed! Good luck everyone
To those wondering about majors in regards to admission:
For the College of L&S major is not considered whatsoever. You get admitted to the college as a pre major which just helps you choose classes. Math is just as easy or hard to get into as bio.
For engineering: major is considered as you are admitted by major. A second choice major is not normally considered but on rare (rare) occasions you can get admitted to your second choice.
Switching into engineering from L&S is designed to be difficult so to all future applicants really weight these two. 1. Maximize chances to get into ucla 2. Study a major you really want.
