UCLA Class of 2022 - Applicant Thread

Hi im thinking of choosing hitch suites but i heard that there is no ac??? I mean its the most expensive option and yet there is no ac?

@raebae I went to the Housing Administration the last time I visited and asked about this. The woman who helped me said that you can’t adjust the AC in the Suites. However, the Suites have central AC that will kick in depending on the weather. She also said that you can control the AC in the Deluxes and Plazas. Hope this helps!

@2018collegebound Ok thank you !! So there is ac in the rooms in hitch right? I mean especially during summer (cali’s summer can b q hot at times) just that its a central ac and u cant control the temp ?

@Raebae Based on what the representative I spoke with said, that should be the case. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t vary based on the room’s location, but if you visit UCLA you might want to ask the Housing Administration just to be safe

Okay thank you ! :relaxed: @2018collegebound

Hi im sry i have another qns : if lets say hitch suites doesnt have ac, will there at least b a fan in the bedrooms or will i have to bring in my own fan? I mean there is a ceiling fan in the living room but how bout the bedrooms?

@Raebae I’m not sure about that. I heard that lots of students bring their own fans, so I assume there isn’t. I will be touring the suites at Bruin day tomorrow and will let you know if I learn anything more about this

@Raebae So I just got back from Bruin Day (and I’m officially committing to the university!) and I went on the housing tour. The Suites, Deluxes, and Plazas all have AC, but the Classics do not. From what I saw, students in the Classics bring their own fans. Anyways, I hope this helps!

On another note, who else here went to Bruin Day today? What did you guys think about the event? Personally I loved it, it really helped me feel at home at the university

omg thank you so much !! I’m still in high school but ucla is my dream college !! Can’t wait to b a bruin in the future !!

@CollegeBound2018 so sorry i forgot to tag u opps HAHAHA

@Raebae No problem! And good luck getting in, let me know if you want any tips on the essays/UC app

@raebae I don’t think your school year dorm would be the same dorm for summer session. I would assume it’s another application and process. S attends and did not have A/C but brought a fan. He said it was fine. He maybe attending summer session this summer, and it’s a separate application. First year he was in typical dorm, he’s been in university apartments (off campus) this year, and just secured university apartment housing for next year also.

is anyone familiar with the education minor at UCLA? I possibly want to become a teacher in the future and since uc’s don’t have an education major I am hoping to learn more about the minor.

also does anyone know the acceptance rate of getting into the psychology or communications major?

I am posting this back to CC because I was looking for this information earlier this year. Perhaps it will help an applicant next time around. My son was admitted to UCLA Engineering and I got this info at the Admit Day this past weekend (4/15/18) – aka the “Discover UCLA Engineering!” event. First thing: in the general session with Dean Murthy, they discussed the overall admit rate for UCLA Engineering this year. The college was filling about 800 slots for class of 2022. There was a bar chart that from eyeballing it, looked like there were about 28k applicants but I saw another number over on the side, 26,202 … so, total applicants is somewhere around those numbers. Bar chart showed approximately 3k accepted to UCLA Engineering. So, the admit rate is probably around 11% among an incredibly qualified pool (they don’t show the stats of the pool but you hear colleges throwing around admit rates which is totally meaningless in a vacuum … it all depends on who else applies and the engineering pools have higher stats). Those are your overall odds if you apply but this varies significantly by department, though they did not show those statistics (but you can see the trends if you really comb through CC both for UCLA and Cal … some of the majors are much harder than others to get into … there is also some historical data for UCLA that you can unearth). In a separate session specifically for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers they showed the data I am going to paste at the bottom. This looks to be old because it uses an 2400 SAT scale … but it can’t be ancient because it was posted in a presentation yesterday and it should give you a starting point. It was presented by a UCLA ME professor. One of the department heads remarked in the general session earlier in the day that they are not supposed to share these scores as some admitted students are scoring well below this… so take this data while you can to better understand whether you should apply to UCLA Engineering! If you are of a demographic that they are hoping to increase for the school, you might be able to get in with lower scores. If you are of a demographic that is highly represented and/or applies heavily to engineering, you may need to be on the higher end of this range. They have specific demographics they are hoping to increase – you can Google it (!!!) – they are pursuing this in an attempt to align the College with the population as a whole (take it to another CC page if you want to argue the merits of this … I am posting here to help your decision making process). My son is white boy and we are from N. Cal. His stats that got him in were: 3.97 unweighted, 4.6 A-G, 1540 SAT (790 Math, 750 Reading/Writing), 800 Math 2, 5s on his math and science AP tests (as low at 3 on some others), two published scientific papers from internship at major university, attended Nanoscience Institute at UCLA for a week after junior year, Eagle Scout + 2 varsity sports + musician, National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction. He did not get into Berkeley Engineering (did get into engineering at UCSD, UCSB, Davis, also Cal Poly, waitlisted or turned down by many privates during Regular Decision and we are full-pay and he had glowing recs … but we are a public school family: son is at public high school, parents’ and sister’s universities are prestigious publics, we are coming from Calif with great and inexpensive public choices, so am guessing the private schools thought he would not accept any offers and he was shot down due to yield concerns … so if you want private, you had better go ED). Presumably, he could have quite easily gotten into Berkeley L&S but that is not how it works at UC. You pick your college and go with the odds (generally, you cannot game it by applying to L&S and transferring to Engineering at UC). You don’t get L&S as second choice if you miss on the Engineering application, even if your stats are much higher than other similar kids from your school who get into L&S (this was definitely the case). My understanding is that the Cal Engineering admit rate for class of 2022 was even slightly lower than the UCLA rate which makes sense as the overall engineering program is more highly rated. Perusing CC, I saw quite a few applicants with profiles similar to my son’s who were also shot down for Berkeley Engineering … so act accordingly and set your expectations. Hopefully those who spend the time reading CC make better decisions. It helped us! My son may SIR a private school back east … but we are so happy he got into UCLA. GOOD LUCK, everybody.

@10s4life, I have couple of basic questions about COA sheet provided by UCLA. The housing+meal cost is $15991 and other education cost is $3712. But if you look at the the price list provided by the UCLA housing (mentioned on their website also). the Classic + BP19 pan cost is $13176, assuming most of the incoming students end up at Classic dorm. Is that the price given by UCLA is max. possible price for Plaza/Suite+BP19 plans?
What about the “other” education cost? Is it related to club fees, and personal expenses? This number, $3712 is way more than what other UCs are quoting. Just curious know. Thanks…

@WCbound The housing they list is the average housing price across all types they offer. It’s a worse case scenario since most freshman are in classic triples. For paying add together “tuition and registration fees” and actual “housing” to get your base cost for attendance. Anything else that’s listed will vary. Some students spend a lot outside of tuition other’s don’t. Travel depends on where you live and how often you go home.

Thank you ! All the best in ucla !! @CollegeBound2018

Sorry i don’t get you. Are u trying to say that summer session students in hitch suites do not have ac ? @svlab112
