@collegedreamer167 That’s what I’ve heard as well. It seems that this year, Berkeley really is taking the holistic approach. It always has been more of a what-you-can-do than a what-you-have-tested school, and that’s the lifeline I’m hanging on. A good friend of mine was rejected from LA, but accepted to Berkeley, with straight Bs junior year. Below average UC GPA, but impeccable ECs and life experience. It’s safe to assume Berkeley tries to look at you overall, more so than the other colleges.
@collegedoozy this year in specific, Berkeley is taking an even more holistic approach than usual? I always thought that Berkeley takes more of a holistic approach based off of what I have seen on YouTube. I always see students making videos about being accepted to Berkeley with a low score or gpa but I don’t see any videos being made about UCLA in that light
@collegedreamer167 Maybe not more than usual, but it certainly has admitted a large number of students who are seemingly lesser in terms of GPA and test scores, with undoubtedly stellar ECs and essays. I was agreeing with you, in that Berkeley is more of a holistic judge of applicants than LA. LA is renowned for its science and medical programs, so I’d imagine having students who are clearly test and grade-savvy is important to them. Not to say that Berkeley doesn’t have prestigious science programs, but it has lately been a hub for business and the liberal arts. Their emphasis on divergent thinking is likely what makes their admissions so holistic. LA is still very cut and dry, so I think that may be the reason they lean towards admitting those with high GPAs and test scores.
@collegedreamer167 From what I’ve seen, Berkeley seems to be the most comprehensive in its review. Though, considering I’m not an expert, take that for what it is.
@collegedoozy Of course no one can be certain, but a lot of people are blaming the Davis fiasco on “yield protection”, or attempting to maintain a good amount of committed students. Thus, depending on your stats and accomplishments, you might argue that’s one of the reasons. Regardless, each UC evaluates applications with weight on different criteria and preferences, so don’t immediately feel discouraged because of Davis
@stevensonjj0 Oh I was discouraged all right, I went into hiding when I found out on Friday. I heard talk of yield protection, but it felt cocky to chalk my waitlisting up to all that. But, I’m awaiting better news. Davis, your loss! Regardless, congratulations on CHP. Are you waiting on LA as a top choice of yours?
@collegedoozy Does UCLA admit any students with low scores but stellar extracurriculars? I haven’t heard any stories
Ucla does practice holistic review. It can’t however provide the complete holistic philosophy of cal simply because of the number of applicants. Ucla consistently gets 15-30k more freshman applicants than cal (30k this year). That sheer number makes it hard not to be biased towards academic achievement. I can assure you though Ucla students are very well rounded and just studying is def not part of the culture here. It’s very work hard play hard.
@collegedoozy Thank you! And yes, I am waiting for UCLA the most, but would be just fine with UCI.
Is it true that UCLA’s ACT is 27-33? If so, their average ACT is a 30
@StressedSeniorInt That Number is outdated and is from 2014. The 2017 Number is 30-34 for the 25th and 75th percentiles respectively.
@10s4life Can you please point out where you got that info? thx
(btw, I got mine from searching “UCLA cds 2017”)
^ Admitted vs. enrolled:
http://www.admission.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_fr/Frosh_Prof17.htm
In 2014, it was 28-34 admitted, 26-32 enrolled (CDS shows stats for enrolled).
@StressedSeniorInt Googles stats for it says 2014. If you go to Ucla.com or the link above^^^ you’ll see. In general all schools publish basic stats such as the 25th-75th percentiles for scores and gpa on their websites.

great! thx guys!
Looking at last years thread it looked like people got accepted on the 17th. Do you think we’ll hear decisions this week then? Thanks!
I highly doubt UCLA will release before UCSD, I don’t think it has every happened. Plus they receive about 20k more apps, so yeah. I guess if UCSD releases before this weekend UCLA might this Friday, otherwise next Friday maybe. I could be wrong through.
@nikkicoco18 If things shape up to follow the previous years then yes. But in past years it was also the third week of March and the third full week is the 23rd so it can go both ways. I’m leaning towards this Friday
Also since UCLA doesn’t want everyone logging on at the same time to prevent the portal from crashing - wouldn’t they post results on an unexpected day? So it could be next Friday (23) but the majority are predicting it’s this Friday. Despite my reasoning, I still think it might be this week
Guys please read the previous posts before asking the same question as a person who literally asks the same thing as you 2/3 posts before you… According to somewhat legit evidence, UCLA decision release is expected this Friday 16th at 5PM local time…
If not, latest by next week Friday. So sit tight it’s almost here.
