UCLA Class of 2022 - Applicant Thread

@jrh082500 there’s a little more here about how you are evaluated in context of your high school https://www.admission.ucla.edu/FAQ/FAQgeneral.htm

@Fairfaxfun Thanks!!!

does it make a significant difference that I am the first person from my high school to apply to ucla and I am out of state? I go to school in the South, where people generally go to the same three colleges if they go to college at all. I am just wondering if this gives me any sort of advantage.

@srp2018 I don’t believe being the first to apply from your school gives you an advantage, but if you’re in a school where most people have mediocre stats but you have exceptional ones, it might demonstrates your academic strength and that would be an advantage.

@ infernoenigma they did update the website saying Mid March 2018, so I am assuming tomorrow at 5PM PST. good luck everyone.

@10s4life: You make a very good point about UCLA vs the other engineering programs … indeed, one might have a much better chance getting into UCLA having shown no outside STEM interest vs a Caltech. Does that outside STEM activity give you any edge, however, when you apply to UCLA? Maybe. I have been told it can help. I guess our family is about to find out (though you can’t really tease the grades and scores from the rest of the application). Re: URM, perhaps it is not explicit but clearly it factors in. The university administration has said they want more women, for example, in STEM (or at least in engineering). They can take whomever they please behind closed doors. Perhaps they can’t “explicitly” state who they are leaning toward (I do agree with that part) but they can intentionally try to round out the class as they see fit. That’s part of the reason they use a holistic system. All you have to do is watch CC feedback on admit day to see the very wide range of grades and test scores getting into the university. There’s the law and then there’s the de facto of who is in the class. Not at all suggesting that we get into the rat’s nest of whether that is “fair” … just pointing out that the university doesn’t only take the students with the top scores and grades. But mostly they do, at least from a given school. All you have to do is look at Naviance to see who gets in. Unfortunately, sometimes kids hang on false hope that low grades or scores will be overlooked because they have great activities.

@kaelen I took 7 full-year honors courses and 8 APs

Decision time and date?

@jeremy_cohrt most people believe it’ll be tomorrow at 5PM

@10s4life Merci!

Best of lucks to all UCLA applicants! If you decide to attend UCLA and look for some fun, healthy activities, I strongly recommend Dragon Boat. UCLA has a strong tradition in the sport. The team practice, compete at very nice locations like beaches or lakes, make it more enjoyable to hang out. It definitely helps to keep you fit (rowing 7000 lb boat , all out for 2 minutes, multiple times). You would hear all sort of sounds from drums, cheering, etc… during competitions. Kind of unique. As a UCLA parent, we enjoyed traveling to Temple, Arizona, Long Beach to see them compete. In fact, our dog traveled with us and he’s kind of unofficial team dog :slight_smile:

@10s4life Thanks a lot for all your precise and helpful replies. You are an angel in this world of chaos. .

Wait, so does that mean that both UCLA and UCSD are coming out tomorrow?

I would not be surprised if decisions came out tomorrow :wink:

How are applicants compared with other students from their school? For example, if I apply to the engineering school and another person from my school applies to L&S, will we still be compared with each other?

@Copywroted No because L&S has seperate admission committees compared to engineering.

Does UCLA not have a holistic admissions process?

@ucplsacceptme UCLA does have a holistic admission process but I heard Berkeley is much more holistic than UCLA

UCI decisions still haven’t been released so it might get released tomorrow…Does that mean UC Irvine, UCLA and UCSD will all get released on the same day?!
