UCLA Communication Transfer

I wanted to create a thread for one of UCLA’s most impacted majors, communication. Were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted? I was accepted with a 3.75 GPA and am completely shocked. Perhaps it was my extra curriculars or my personal statement that helped, but my counselor told me she had never met anyone who got in below a 3.8 so I am very proud of myself.
Anyways, what was your GPA/ what do you think helped or hurt your application? I also am interested in who was in the applicant pool because we were all competing against each other and now there’s no more stress

I was rejected from UCLA’s communication. My GPA is 4.0, I finished most of the major requirements except one. It’s unbelievable that I was rejected. I gave my personal statement to someone to review, so I think there’s no problem on my personal statement.

That’s astounding! congrats! are you set on UCLA? I’m applying there as a Comm major in fall 2017! Currently a freshman at a ccc. My Gpa is a 3.9, and I’m finishing up all my pre-reqs this summer so that I can apply with my pre-reqs done. Any advice for the application process?

@mk96217 thanks! I’d say definitely finish your pre-reqs, but I didn’t even finish all of mine (5/7, but am taking public speaking now that it’s summer). You have a nice GPA so I think academically you’re fine. Have you joined any comm-related clubs? I was on the school newspaper and wrote about my experience in my PS. I’d say just show that you have interest in the major, I think that’s what they really look for

@californiagirl95 thank you for the advice!

hmm I was feature editor for my high school newspaper, not sure if hs counts though. I write for the freshman online newspaper at cc, but I won’t be a freshman after this year. Didn’t join any comm related clubs unfortunately, but I recently worked as a public relations intern for a company in Downtown LA, and that was quite fun.

Did you finish your ITGEC? And do you know anyone else who got in for Comm at UCLA? Also, may I ask what you want to pursue career wise? Sorry for the questions! I’m curious

@mk96217 I’m happy to help  I included two things from high school that were leadership positions, so I think it’s worth mentioning if it was in your junior or senior year, wouldn’t hurt. I honestly didn’t do too much but what I did was significant, so think quality over quantity. I also had A LOT of work experience, which counts as an extra curricular (just working in a restaurant).

Yes, I finished IGETC. I think it’s a requirement in order to apply (or have it finished by end of Spring, I’d have to look). I know one person who did the year before me but I think they had a 3.8. Also, does your school have an honors program? JOIN! They say it isn’t considered for impacted majors, but I think it helps. I either want to be a teacher, counselor (therapist), or a copyeditor. I know, broad range, but that’s why I love comm so much. It allows me to do all I want to do plus it helps me understand my own life better.

@californiagirl95 Ahh thank you! And I did join honors! Planning to do TAP :DD. Yup, comm is very broad, and those are nice career choices! Thanks again, and good luck at LA!

rejected.
4.0 all prereqs and IGETC completed. w/ 6 years in the industry as well as 3 internships w/ various ad agencies and one digital magazine. (Im a non-traditional student aka older than 21) …can’t really say why I was rejected other than I have ZERO “school” EC’s. Accepted to all other schools applied. Going to Columbia.

Join the Honors or Scholars program, make sure you have a lot of EC’s, and complete all pre-reqs and IGETC. And have a backup. You never know what can happen.

@mk96217 good! Thank you, and you will do amazing things no matter what school you get into, never forget that

@Mike2011 I’m sorry to hear that, but Columbia is awesome. Yes, I agree, always have a back up.

@Mike2011 By finishing pre-reqs do you mean you finished all 7 before applying, or at least by the end of fall when you were applying? and same for IGETC? Congrats on Columbia btw! oh also, were you in the Honors program at your school?
