UCLA Communications Major?

I was recently admitted to UCLA for fall 2012. I was accepted as an environmental sciences major but I would really like to major in a less scientific field. I am hoping to switch to Communications, but I have read that you cannot do this until sophomore year.
Is this true?
If so, what major should I switch to in the mean time to prepare for Communications?
How hard is it to switch into this major?
Do I switch my major at orientation?
How does this work?

It technically doesn’t matter what major you’re admitted into, as long as what you plan on switching into isn’t in another college (which isn’t your case since both majors are within letter and science) But you can switch your major at orientation easily. Like seriously, one slip of paper just saying what you want to switch into. However, i’ve heard it’s difficult to get into communication (keep in mind, not impossible). So I’d ask your counselor during orientation, on what to do, since that’s their job/would know all about it. and also [Undergraduate Study](http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/catalog/catalog11-12-226.htm)

A person I met at reception day asked this -
required GPA 3.9. It is one of the most popular majors at UCLA and hence, there is only a 4% acceptance rate. It would be extremely difficult to transfer to communications to, though possible. (Make sure to get the GPA, take prerequisites of course for that major )
If you are only interested in Communications then I wouldn’t bet my 4 years on UCLA if things don’t work out - but good luck! st4rlight124 is right - best thing to ask your counselor if you decide to attend.

^ what the **** are you smoking? are you saying you need a 3.9 gpa in college to be in the communications major? LOL

no, no, no, no, no.

A simple google search gave me this info:
"
There is no minimum grade point average required for admission.
Admission decisions are based solely on the current year’s pool of applicants.
The Admission Committee’s criteria for acceptance are overall academic proficiency and courses relevant to the major. "

from here [Admission — Communication Studies](http://commstudies.ucla.edu/openadmin)

on top of that, you need a 3.6 when you graduate as a communications major to receive departmental honors…that alone should tell you why it’s kind of a joke. it’s north campus, what do you expect though?

and to the OP, the major you got accepted as means absolutely nothing and you can easily switch during orientation or anytime after that before the end of your 2nd year.

I have the exact same situation. I got in as a biology major, but also wanted to switch to something less scientific. I officially switched my major at orientation to pre-communications. “Pre” because as you know you can’t immediately become a communications major since it is competitive and there is an application process later on, but hey have faith in yourself that you’ll be a good student and try, that’s what I’m doing  The way I switched is I literally told my NSA (new student advisor) at orientation, “hey I’d like to switch to communications please” and that’s how you switch, they do some clickity clacking on a website and print some paper and boom, your major is switched.

You should switch to “pre-communications” to prepare for communication studies and take pre-comm classes that are specified in the catalog:

"Preparation for the Major:

Students are encouraged but not required to complete as many lower division preparation for the major courses as possible before admission to the program.

Required Lower Division Courses: Communication Studies 1, 10, one course selected from Anthropology 33, Communication Studies M70, Linguistics 1, or Sociology 24, one statistics course from Economics 41, Statistics 10, or 11. Three additional courses must be selected from Political Science 40, Psychology 10, Sociology 1, and Economics 1 or 5 or Political Science 30."

Don’t even try signing up for psychology or sociology though. I tried, not gonna happen! :(

Good luck!

If you’re admitted as E-science, why switch to com? Those “sciency” degrees are the ones that will get you a job later. If you graduate with comm you better plan on going to grad school for a decent degree.

^What’s the point of doing enviro. science if you don’t want to…? My Comm. friends have internships every quarter, and are really happy with the major…Also, there’s a lot of job offerings for advertisement/PR (or at least on bruinview) so it’s not like there’s no where to go after you graduate.

Your comm friends probably have unpaid internships.
