On ASSIST, it says you must meet all requirements for Sociology except Sociology 20 (I think it’s social analysis). Of course you should try to complete it to be a more competitive applicant though.

But with alternate majors, you don’t necessarily have to complete all the requirements since most TAP students get in with their first choice anyway. (I do understand that you’re a comm major.) I know a few people who got in with their alternative major without completing all the pre-reqs - just most of them.

I honestly think you have a pretty good chance! Good luck.

thanks for the advice, I’ll be sure to include something about summer plans to complete my pre-reqs (either at Cal or UCLA).

Edelynly –

I’m confused…you replied to my post on another forum that my gpa will make it extremely difficult to transfer from UCSD to UCLA as communications. I don’t really have much choice for a second major…except maybe Art History (for which I’ll have the pre-reqs done by Spring 2010), but I’m not sure if I want to go to UCLA for a major like Art History.

i called a rep from the comm department and she told me they are only looking at gpas now. she also mentioned nobody with less than a 3.9 got in this year. that is so unfair! so now the only sure way to get in is a perfect gpa? thats crazy.

i have a 3.8 trying for business econ for next fall at UCLA. I got a B in pre cal, by mistake i thought i was taking it credit no credit. IM tryin to get my grade changed but if not I’ll have a 3.78 around. AFter next semester I should have a 3.8. I’m doing TAP and I am gonna have all my prereqs done for Biz econ and my 2nd choice major of geography. I did really bad at CC when I was a young buck at 18 but since I got my act together I retook a lot of stuff and ended up with a pretty solid GPA. What are my chances, do I need a super stellar essay. My honors counselor says I need a killer essay. ANy tips

UCLA only accepted like 80 ppl int Comm this time… and they only looked at apps with 3.9 and above. Sorry, all of he yongsters g into Com leavin no roomfor trasfers.

I know because I met with the scholars counselor @ SMC and she got her undergrad in Comm @ UCLA and also worked there… she still keeps in contact with the dept and they told her that they only looked at 3.9+ and next year will prob be the same. There are too many apps for less than 100 spots. She said that it didn’t matter how amazing your EC’s are because now they’re only looking at 3.9+.

Oh wow…dang…thanks for the heads up. I’m probably going to apply for Poli Sci or Art History. Pre-poli sci is pretty impacted as well though and I haven’t done any of the pre-requisites yet…and Art History is kind’ve a useless major. What do ya’ll think?

ldhch123- Go for Poli Sci! They admit a lot more students.

socal4- They look at both gpa’s but gpa from courses on assist (pre-reqs) is prob most important. I think cum above 3.5 and pre-reqs should be even higher.

I have a cumulative GPA of 3.73 and pre reqs GPA are 4.0 for communication major. EC’s are student government, honor society, member of USA weightlifting because i competed a couple of years ago and also did some volunteer work. i will have IGETC finish and pre reqs before spring. Do i have a chance of getting in with communications major? because i read that someone said they only viewed applicants with GPA of 3.9+ :(

what exactly is so special about the communications department that so many people apply with near perfect gpas? why is there so much competition?

People like Communication because of the Media emphesis…and we’re in LA so everyone wants to get a job within the meda industry. Plus there are any math requirements besides stats… so it’s a fun major with a potential for a fun job.

I have taken all the pre-reqs. My GPA is a 3.6. What should I do? I have 60 units after 3 semesters Fall/Spring and Fall '09. I will continue at my CC for another semester, but what should I do to better my chances?

People - don’t bother, seriously! I got declined with 3.94 and a life story quite different from what an average applicant has. They just don’t have enough spots to offer admission to all eligible applicants. I called the Communications department after the admission decisions were released and they told me that this year, they had a record number of applications (about 1000) and only 80 spots. Keep in mind that you compete against other transfers AND people from UCLA who are already there but need to fulfill the pre-req’s before declaring the major. If you are applying to Comm Studies because you want to eventually get a job in the media/entertainment industry in LA - go to USC, seriously! They have better connections and networking opportunities and we all know it’s all about networking! If your goal is just to get into UCLA and you don’t have TAP to back yourself up with a second-choice major, go with a major that’s not as capped. You’ll make your own life easier Good luck! And Go Bears! lol
