ucla counselor wrong?

Hey guys,
I just talked to a ucla counselor 5 minutes ago and she said that we cannot finish igetc OR prereqs during the summer before transfer. is that true? I thought only igetc had to be finished by spring

Nope- she’s right. They have to be done by Spring. That goes for any UC- not just UCLA- unless you have a really special situation (death in fam, life-altering accident, military duty).

But maybe after you’re in you can get those grades added. They just won’t affect the admission decision- they’ll see you as not having fulfilled ALL the pre-reqs by Spring. A lot of UC and CSU students take concurrent lower division classes at Junior Colleges, and then those grades often can be transferable. There are ALWAYS exceptions, though, so consult as many reputable sources as you can! Don’t be afraid to question! This is your future- you deserve to be selfish! :)

in general, i think everyone should never trust a counselor…one time i asked my CC counselor about something and it turned out that she either lied or was an idiot…but anyways this forum gives u better information than counselors lol

repeat thread?

but i agree with what was said above, most the UC’s require your pre-reqs to be completed by the spring before transferring.

The UCLA counselor is definitely right.

Is it more important to have IGETC finished or major prereqs completed?

any major that absolutely requires crazy prereqs (ie- biology/sciences, engineering, etc) will advise you to NOT complete IGETC, but complete the GE breadth specified by the specific department or school. For other majors, like humanities and social sciences, you should do your best to complete your prereqs but if you can’t for some reason then you won’t be penalized too much. Likewise, if you planned poorly, but somehow made up for it (like if you were a history major and had to complete 4 specific history courses, but 1 of them was only offered in fall and you didnt take it but took 1 or 2 more non required history courses in the spring), you should still remain competitive. In the example I just gave, you could take that last history prereq that summer and have it count towards your graduation requirements and units, but it wouldnt affect your app.

thanks guys. yeah sorry I accidentally repeated the thread b/c it told me it failed to post the first time.

Yeah, I finished IGETC and my major is molecular biology. I decided to not drop so I can finish my prereqs by spring.
