UCLA Decision Countdown

I know!!!! So many people call the admissions offices and I can appreciate that because it gives me more information, but personally, I would NEVER call because in the application it states very clearly that they don't want any calls.

Awww, what could be better than talking to a stressed-out, wired transfer student who's on pins and needles? Sounds like fun to me! :p

Folks question....been looking on the housing portion of the website, the rates are exorbitant. But, this aint no country club, this aint no disco either....this is LA. lol Goodness, anyway, excuse the sticker shock. Besides housing....been looking at commute times. Hope everyone knows what they're getting themselves into. Lived in LA quite a while ago, but I don't think I've fully grasped how terrible it's "gotten" lately. ;-)

DO NOT COMMUTE. I repeat, DO NOT COMMUTE.

Anything over the hill, under the hill or otherwise not in LA is a horrible, painful experience.

At least get a cheap apt. in Palms.

Well, it's a necessarily evil, unfortunately. I'm used to it, commuted to work and to school everyday, but it was going North, not South ever. The commute to UCSB is just as bad as the commute to UCLA, believe it or not.

UCLAri, I completely agree with you. But I have friends in Grad school who commute to UCLA and they do it, so I figure we're all in the same boat. Frankly, I would rather study in the library and commute everyday than have to get two jobs to pay for an LA apartment. The Palms, you say? I'll have to look into it, for conversation's sake (knock on wood, speculation at this point, but it's always a good thing to be prepared).

Note: Even if a person lived near UCLA, which obviously settles the commuting problem, how on earth do you get anywhere? Most of my friends who live out in West LA (non-UCLA students, but just residents) tell me how horrific the traffic is even on side streets. My point is....no matter where you live, you still have to deal with the traffic in LA, whether you're going to class, or trying to get out of the city......it's a fact of life in the big city.

I'm not trying to state the obvious, but I'm just reminded that it took me over 2 hours just to get on the 405 off of Wilshire Blvd.and then another 2 hours just to get to my "local" destination. A grand total of 20 miles in 4 hours, excellent. ;-)

I live about 25 miles from Westwood... In Rush Hour going South it takes about an hour and a half to make the drive... I'm not going to UCLA yet, but hopefully will be next year and do plan to commute. I honestly am going to try my best to leave early, and then stay on campus all day and leave after the big Rush Hour time...

With that said it should be noted that the 405 by UCLA is ALWAYS busy! I've been on that stretch at 3am before and see traffic. So at least right there you can't always win.

The point is, you are not a grad student. You should look to become part of the community in a way that commuting cannot offer.

Not everyone has the same outlook, but living on your own makes a world of difference.

Oy, I'm from Orange County and people here commute to UCI only to realize sitting in an hour of traffic before and after class everyday can ruin the "college experience," and drain energy that should be used for studying. If I get into UCLA, I'll be living in a little run-down shack during the week and come home on weekends to load up on homecooked meals and freshly laundered clothes.

yea seriously.....i live about 25 miles from UCLA and during the right hours of traffic......it can take me about 2 hours to get there...=X....UCLA is extremely nice. Their commons, although pricey, really are worth it in my oppinion. They have options lik typical old school halls (Sproul, Rieber, Heidrick, Dykstra) and new mini suites lik Sunset and De Neve. Plus they have pretty good food thats open until 2AM (can u say munchies?!). Also did i mention UCLA dorm food is second in the nation?! Yea....its pretty good.

I will do whatever it takes to find a place close to campus. I plan on selling my beloved car and biking/hiking/bussing to school. Where there is a will, there is a way...even in LA. ;)

Again, my recommendations for living near UCLA, but not in Westwood, are:

Palms
Believe it or not, Brentwood
Culver City

With a roomie or two, you can make a 1 or 2bdrm into an affordable venture. I've seen nice 1bdrms for less than $1K a month. That's much cheaper than the absurd prices in Westwood.

Allena, see you on the 405. If it works out, I'll also be doing that as well. Leaving after being on-campus most of the day.

UCLA, I appreciate everything you're saying. I would love to move down there and will pursue it, but a) I love living at the beach, have lived here all my life and b) I've lived on my own for many years now; c) would have to find a place that would allow my doggies (have two big Labs) and so on...Lots of variables, but I will definitely check into those cities that you mentioned.

Either way, you have to commute....to school, to church, to work, to your favorite restaurant, to concert venues. lol It's a no-win situation. As to becoming a part of the community, that's not a problem. As I said, I would be on-campus most of the day, like the rest of the "commuters" trying to avoid rush-hour. lol

Exilio.....awww, don't sell your car. Wow, I couldn't think of selling mine. I just bought it. What lengths you all will go to! Just shows how committed you all are....ameliortatively said.

this thread is great. i wish the adcom people could see this and maybe just admit us all based on how well-planned we are.

two more days!

Is Compton near UCLA? Maybe apartment price is less expensive over there.

Do you really want to live in Compton? I mean isn't that kind of a bad area in L.A.?

Go to the UCLA housing site.. it shows you the areas around UCLA and the average prices for a studio, 1 bedrm, etc... If I end up at UCLA, I'm thinking about living in Palms or RAncho Park..

For the record, if any of you end up living on the UCLA side of the hill, do yourselves a favor, and don't park at UCLA. Take the bus.

Why? Well, you save lots of money. You save hassle. You save time.

The closer I get to finding out, the more agonizing the waiting becomes. I wish I could just take a pill to knock myself out until thursday morning, but with my luck they wouldn't even have posted a decision for me on Wed. anyway. I'm just so anxious.

Finallly...it has been only 2 days left...

Studying hard during these whole 2 years and ALL are just for it!!!

Getting into UCLA means too much for me in my current life. The only thing I can do now is just praying...praying...praying...
