Aite so I want to do engineering and have narrowed it down to between UCLA and Bezerkley. I know that Cal is ranked high for eng blah blah, but srsly nao I need to know if it's worth going to cal for teh prestige. I've heard way too many stories about how crappy cal is or how competitive the students are for high grades. That's a turn off.

Give me the low down plzzz

oh and i care more about my sanity than prestige.

Please go to Cal. For your own sanity. It’s not only more prestigious, but much better than UCLA (University of Caucasians lost among Asians). and to other posters- please encourage this young lad to matriculate to UCB- best college for engineering.

For engineering, the choice is clear. Go to Berkeley. I got into LA but not Berkeley for engineering and I still feel a bit down about it. Take Berkeley, it’s an amazing school.

I got into UCB and UCLA engineering and picked UCLA because it’s still a highly ranked program and I LOVED the feeling of the place. I just didn’t like Berkeley. You’re also picking where and with whom you want to live for 4 years. Consider the happiness factor. Happy people learn better.

I’m in the same exact situation as OP. I got into both schools for engineering and I can’t say that the ultra-competitiveness of Berkeley engineering students will make the next 4 years fun.

Is there really that big of a difference between the programs of both schools?

arklogic, I assume you’re enrolled in UCLA engineering. Why would you rather go to Berkeley? I know this may seem to be a stupid question, but I’m looking for a variety of opinions.

Berkeley’s is more prestigious, so if you like that campus/area, go there. However, if you don’t like the feel of the campus and would prefer LA’s, I’d recommend going to UCLA. You should go to the place you feel the most comfortable at because they’re both fairly prestigious and good schools.

Looking for honest answers:
These questions vary from person to person but I’m looking for general and honest answers…

I know they are both excellent schools, but does anyone enrolled in UCLA’s engineering program feel that it is inferior to Berkeley’s?

Is UCLA still very competitive/cutthroat like the OP had mentioned Berkeley to be?

How much free time do UCLA students get? Can you join clubs and organizations without feeling overwhelmed to study and do homework, and still maintain good grades (Mostly As) ?

I doubt it. If they thought the program was inferior, they most likely wouldn’t have enrolled.

It is very competitive (about half who start the major end up transferring out). Probably less cutthroat.

My son had enough free time to work 2 part time jobs, participate in Marching Band, and be a member of a fraternity.
He graduated with a very high gpa.

UCLA band mom, was your son also an engineer major? I hope so because I want to be an engineer major and would love to have free time to do other activities.

How is engineering competitive? I don’t understand how it could be. What is the grading like at UCLA, is it that the top few students get A’s and the rest either get B or C depending on how well they do relative to other students? Also isn’t true that all engineering classes are competitive? Is there a special case for UCLA engineering as compared to lets say U Mich?

I doubt it. If they thought the program was inferior, they most likely wouldn’t have enrolled."

What I mean is that upon after enrollment, do ucla students feel that the program is inferior to berkeley’s? I don’t mean this in a negative way, I know both are prestigious, but Berkeley being ranked as #2 in the nation is surely saying something?

Well gee, how would the UCLA Engineering students know if their classes are “inferior” i* if they haven’t enrolled in the exact same class at Berkeley? Engineering students don’t waste their time in this type of navel gazing, they are all too busy studying.

Most likely, they will know they are inferior from their professors. But it really doesn’t matter whether they know or not. The hiring manager knows. UCB’s Engineering is elite, while UCLA’s is good.

Thanks! I hope I did not offend anyone. I just need honesty from different viewpoints. It’s very difficult for a student to choose between those two because both are very similar!

PlatosCave is right. As a manager, I put premium on Cal engg students, and treat them specially and differentially. When it comes to the rest of the UCs (UCSD, UCLA, UCI, UCD, UCSB), I try to look more into the student’s accomplishments rather than be swayed by UCLA name. You may still want to go to UCLA because you think you belong there, whatever that means.
