Hello,
I am a Senior in high school and I was curious... Does applying to UCLA as an engineering major hurt your chances of acceptance? Is it possible to be accepted at UCLA, but not their engineering school? Is it best to apply as another major and change major when school starts or put Undeclared and go to engineering? Please Help :)

BUMP! i have the exact same question

I can probably only answer one of those questions sorry, or two. It is possilbe to be accepted to UCLA under Letter of sciences even if you applied for school of engineering, it just means your not an engineering major. If you get accepted to ucla for a major in engineering you’re already in the school of engineering. About switching majors, switching from majors outside of the school of engineering is difficult and you’ll need to grades. Switching between engineering majors is probably easier. I just heard these answers by hear, so they most likely is true, but don’t put your whole decision on majoring based on these words. You should probably go research and look at your record to see if your grades or profile leans to be a good match for engineering.

WorriedJrGirl: Thank you for you input anyone else?

I kinda have heard of the same thing. Like when you are applying as an engineering major, you compete with those students who have higher stats. Therefore, it might be a bit more difficult but it doesn’t mean that you will have less chance because I believe that there are far more many people who will be applying for L&S. So, if you really wanna go for engineering because it’s your passion and it’s something you really wanna do, then go for it. Who knows, you might regret later when you realize that you cannot go from L&S to engineering

I think you can put down an ‘alternative major’ on your UC application (It had that option when I applied 2 years ago). If you didn’t get into the first choice major, you might still be accepted into the second major. So you could pick engineering as first choice, then pick another ‘easier’ major for safety. I don’t know exactly how the admission process works, but you can always apply for an L&S major as your first choice and transfer after 2 or 3 quarters. It’s not hard to transfer into HSSEAS provided that you finish a few required courses and get fairly good grades (B+ or better?)

Short Story: Yes, it is more difficult if you apply under engineering.

If you feel you are a solid applicant, I would be all means apply under engineering to save yourself the hassle. Like WorriedJrGirl said, it is easier to switch out of engineering then to switch in. If you are L&S, you’ll need to get good grades first, then petition to transfer in (if you do a search, I gave someone a link about switching to engineering)

Just do what I did. Apply for a random science major, and then switch into engineering. It’s ez pz…

If this is what they do then the information on the UCLA admission FAQ is wrong.

Incorrect. That may possibly might happen if you apply engineering as your primary major choice and put something L and S as secondary choice, but even then it’s dubious.

For applicants into the engineering school, first the general admissions board reviews your application, and they have two choices: (1) reject you outright or (2) pass on your application to reviewers from the engineering faculty, who will make the actual decision. For applicants into engineering, the general admissions board can NOT grant an acceptance without the approval of the engineering review board.

So yes, getting into engineering is harder. But everything worthwhile is harder. That’s life. It is an honor to be an engineer.

If your first choice is Engineering and your second choice is L&S, you won’t be looked at for your second choice except in very rare, rare, rare cases.
