UCLA English Majors

Oh man… I’m an English major and I’m finishing up Japanese 4 instead of two Lit. classes for my pre-reqs @ UCLA… Do you think UCLA would rescind my admission if I got a C in Japanese 4? I’m not saying I will get a C, but Japn4 is making my head want to explode!!!

Also, I’m having a dilemma between choosing English at Cal or UCLA right now too… the only thing is that I’m deferred till spring 2010 at Cal. :</p>

And I heard Cal has the better Engilsh program, but really I’m not sure. I think I’d really miss SoCal too much.

^ Though I haven’t submitted my SIR, I’ve pretty much decided on Cal at this point. Yes, their housing seems to suck horribly, but their English program really is #1 in the nation (tied with Stanford, Yale, and Harvard). UCLA is #11 according to this:

FeeFee34 thats good to hear! what was your GPA?

jvn, honestly if UCLA is accepting people who haven’t completed all the prereqs for English (which is an impacted major) then I think you have a good shot to be accepted since you’re making the effort to have all your prereqs finished by the time you transfer. If you can, try to knock out some prereqs this summer before you apply in the fall.

can some of you English majors that got into UCLA post your GPAs?

I’m applying this fall.

I had 3.89 regular, 3.9+ for UC-transferrable.

I had a 3.73, coming from a private school (but have in-state residency). had a couple of pre-reqs left

I had a 3.8 coming from Los Angeles Pierce College.

I’m seriously torn between doing English at Cal or English at UCLA.

I had a 3.67 gpa from community college.

Wow, you guys have some high gpa’s!

avg GPA of english majors admitted: 3.64
admit rate: 47.15%

how many of the pre-reqs did you guys finish by the time you transferred?

how many pre-reqs are there anyway?

I finished all of them. There are four English prereqs plus the 4 semesters of foreign language/foreign lit in translation, so 8 in all.

are the last 4… (foreign language + lit translation) absolutely necessary before transfer? bec. my counselors said those 4 can be taken at ucla…

I don’t think that it is absolutely necessary since a couple of people at orientation didn’t complete them, but I would try to take as many as I can.

I got accepted into both Cal and UCLA for English this year, and ended up choosing UCLA. I got in with a 3.46 from Los Angeles Pierce College. I had all my pre-reqs done, plus student government and so on. I’m already taking classes over the summer (TSP), and I can tell you for a fact that the english program here is as great as they claim…

did you take it with TAP?

also, when you say you finished all the pre-reqs…do you mean you only finished english 101, 102, 205 and 206…or did you also complete the english lit in translation courses (eng 203,204, 250 or 252) and the foreign language courses?

haha yeah, i meant what i said. i did all the prereqs, including the foreign language requirements and whatnot. i was unaware you could be accepted without them, to be honest. being naive paid off. and yeah, i did TAP alongside it

I got into Berkeley and UCLA and will be attending UCLA also  I didn’t do TAP though, so it isn’t necessary if you have a strong gpa.

krishteene, did you finish the foreign language and english in translation courses too?
