@mitsurinrin They may have decided to accept more high school students than previous semesters or are adjusting their numbers in response to the effect covid may have on fall matriculation rates. I’ll try calling the admissions office on Monday to ask whether or not that is the case.
Major: Data Theory
GPA: 3.2 (lol yeh ik)
Major Prep Complete: Completed by the end of this semester
Extracurricular(s): AKPsi, campus consulting org, an internship at big3 consulting firm (during the school year), an internship at tech non-profit (over the summer), writing (for a few lowkey publications + a state journalism award in HS).
TAP: nope
Opt-in/Opt-out: Opt-in
Reasons you may have been waitlisted: Honestly pretty surprised that I got waitlisted, I’m an OOS w/a low GPA. I think they saw some hope with my EC’s and I tried to explain all my passions and my specific interest in the Data Theory program. I’m also not from a CC so they could be giving priority to in-state, CC students.
First Generation Student: Nope
Additional Info:
Questions: What should we include on our “supplemental” besides our classes + grades? I just want to put it all out there, no matter what the result.
I’m thinking UCLA decided to directly admit less people than the other years because they believe that less will enroll due to the COVID-19 crisis. Maybe their plan is to accept less people now and more off the waitlist later on to protect their yield rate?
Major: Sociology
GPA: 4.0
Major Prep Complete: 1 class IP (Stats); 1 class for IGETC left this summer
Extracurricular(s): English tutoring on campus; associate manager at a movie theatre; roller derby; founded annual food drive in its 7th year in action
TAP: Nope
Opt-in/Opt-out: In
Reasons you may have been waitlisted: IP class, and the fact I have a LOT of withdrawals due to mental health issues. I provided explanation in the extra text box on the UC App and one of my PIQs addressed how it has been my greatest challenge. I totally understand how that would be a gamble for them and am really grateful that they even considered me for waitlist.
First Generation Student: Yes
Additional Info: Poured my heart and soul into that LOCI letter lol. Of course I am very disappointed to not be admitted, BUT I think we all need to make sure we give ourselves a pat on the back for not getting a rejection right off the bat (which is not a poor reflection of a person either). It can be hard to maintain self-esteem at moments like this however there are TONS of factors we can’t control/have no way of knowing in the unpredictability of admissions. I KNOW everyone one of you worked hard to have great apps to even get on the waitlist in the first place. So yay us!
Questions: First off, is the acceptance rate seriously 13% this year instead of 22%?? I’d love to see a link for the stat (haha not that I don’t trust ya, I just want to see as much info/resources about admissions as possible). Second, I keep hearing two things–that COVID is bad for wait listers or that it’s good…thoughts? Third, are waitlists for transfers and freshmen separate? I was wondering if freshman get first choice and then transfers take what’s left.
Honestly, any kind of “good” or simply positive news would be greatly appreciated. I cannot help but hold out a tiny bit of hope that this year UCLA will have the flexibility to be more generous with their waitlist considering the chaotic circumstances in the world right now. Anybody committed to UCI in the meantime? I committed today.
Also–the soonest transfers will begin to hear back about waitlist will be after June 1, right? Probably not in May I’d think?
Waitlisted transfers last year began hearing back in late May
I would really like to know as well!
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.2 (3.3 after Winter)
Major Prep Complete: Yes
Extracurricular(s): I am a member of my CC’s Pre-Health Club, apart of UCLA Health Care Extender Program, Honors Program, volunteered at a Child Institute as well as another Hospital.
TAP: No (I was not able to due to my GPA).
Opt-in/Opt-out: Opt-in.
Reasons you may have been waitlisted: Low GPA. my friend who is also a Psych major and has the exact same extracurricular’s as me got in, but her GPA was a 3.6.
First Generation Student: Yes.
Additional Info: I also got waitlisted to UCI and UCSD, but I got accepted to UCSC. Tbh I was surprised I got waitlisted to UCLA, considering how low my GPA is for psych.
Questions: I was just wondering what everybody is going to write for their additional info? Or if anyone is going to write anything at all? I don’t know if writing a good essay will bump up our chances of getting off, but I hope it does. Good luck to us all!
UCLA does not look at transfers second choice major. So they only look at your first choice.
@wvc2020 Well, for TAP Certified students they do during the first transfer admission cycle. Are you referring to UCLA admissions ignoring waitlist transfers alternate major?
I seriously hope that is the case!
Major: Economics
GPA: 3.91 UC GPA now
Major Prep Complete: Completed by the end of this semester
Extracurricular(s): Internet company intern, refugee organization coordinator, Toefl tutor, and 200+ hours community service in high school.
TAP: N/A
Opt-in/Opt-out: Opt-in
Reasons you may have been waitlisted: Transfer from UC Davis, instead of CCs. Being an international student. Complete too many units (130 UC quarter GPA). First semester GPA in England is relatively low.
First Generation Student: Nope
Additional Info:
Questions: Will waitlist still give priority to students from community college? How many students will get off the waitlist in total? How many offers did UCLA give in this year?
Fellow soc majors: I talked to admissions today and he said that this year in L&S sociology was the most applied to major. Soooo there’s that lol. But he did say to me that UCLA tends to admit a fair amount of students from the waitlist so it’s not hopeless. Of course finish Spring grades strong and SIR still. Good luck y’all, I hope this works out for us! Keep the faith
Hello all,
As an attempt to bring some hope in a very stressful situation(Waitlist) during a very stressful time(Global Crisis), I was waitlisted as a transfer last year(Philosophy major) and was admitted on June 6. If anyone has any questions regarding the waitlist process or the succeeding steps or about UCLA in general, please feel free to reach out!
Hi y’all!
I’ve been looking through this thread for the past two days now and thought I would answer some of your questions. I called the UCLA admissions office today about the waitlist process and if the pandemic would have any effect on it. Here are some points they made:
- This year's selection for transfers was not affected by this year's pandemic. They make the decisions from January - April. So the 13% acceptance rate this year was just because this year had to be more selective due to the amount of spots they had available compared to how many applied.
- The freshman waitlist has nothing to do with the transfer waitlist. The only reason it would affect the transfer waitlist is if all freshman got off the waitlist... which has never happened before.
- The waitlist, even this year, will not show favor to anyone, whether they are in-state, oos, or international students. If there was a point in which more oos and international students get off instead of in-state, it was a mere coincidence. However, during the original selection process, the UC system, in general, favors CCC students, but this was already taken into account when they waitlisted you.
- Your chances of getting off the waitlist actually does depend on your major and how many people in your major decide not to go to UCLA.
My two cents: Basically UCLA has not done anything on purpose due to covid-19 to answer your questions. But it doesn’t necessarily mean covid-19 won’t have any effect on the yield. I know this may not be what we want to hear, but at least it answered some questions. I say don’t lose hope if UCLA is still your top-choice college. It is better to expect this year to play out like any other year, but anything can happen.
@refusetosettle Thank you for keeping us posted!!! It is much appreciated
Did they happen to mention whether or not they take into consideration the enroll rate for each major when accepting students?
For example, psych has an 80% enroll rate. So, I was wondering if they would over enroll in the beginning to compensate for the 20% that decide not to attend.
@“transfer20!” Unfortunately, I did not ask about that nor did they mention it. However, based on the impression they gave me, it seems like they didn’t over enroll in general. They only gave spots based on what they have. I can’t for sure know if they give spots based on major either.
Wow so if major does have an effect then I highly, highly doubt I have a chance. Y’all I’m trying my best to be positive. It just sucks…so freaking much. I know that there are so many factors that impact this, but I it’s so hard to not internalize it a little bit. And that’s not their fault, if you play the game you have to know there’s a chance you will lose.
Major: Business
GPA: 4.0
Major Prep Complete: 1 left, and i taking this semester
Extracurricular(s): internship, club activity, voulenteer
TAP: no
Opt-in/Opt-out: in
Reasons you may have been waitlisted: Honestly i think because i have 1 W on my major prep which is Calculus 2, however i’m pretty sure i’ll get an A in this semester
First Generation Student: nope
Additional Info:
Questions: I just wondering, what should i put on the waitlist, what i need to put in my optional comment to be considered as a competitive in the waitlist.
