Here's the link, enjoy. And good luck to everyone applying in the future.

oh no!
the avg admitted gpa for business economics has increased by .01!!!!!!
I'm doomed!!!!

Oh no!

As for my major, Global studies, I'm glad I'm above the normal average, phew. But I still want to improve..
For being such a new major, I am surprise that there're so many applicants.

It never ceases to amaze me that the average gpa for Comm applicants hovers around is 3.35 every year, even though the ABSOLUTE, we-wont-even-acknowledge-your-existence-gpa is 3.5. Do a ton of people just not get the memo?

average GPA for EE admits actually decreased from 3.75 to 3.71

allie: I guess they just want to see if they have a lucky shot. Afterall, impacted majors like bio have some admits with GPAs are 3.2. But I know, it's still nothing as impacted as Communications.

I know this sounds ignorant of me, I don't know much about communications, but why is communications impacted? What do you study in it specifically? Is communications a good major for grad school? I know the biological science majors are pretty impacted because tons of these kids want to go to med school, but it is still no where as impacted as Communications.

Well I don't mean like, oh its impacted so you need a high gpa. I mean, it's so impacted that they flat out say they'll throw out your application if you don't have at least a 3.5. Like, it's on the department website. It's not hard to miss.

Comm is impacted because it is teh fun! Sometimes. People like it because you have lots and lots and lots of options, both for grad school and careers. Lots of pre-law kids in communications, lots of media kids, etc. I'm mostly advertising, but I came in wanting to go into publishing. You literally study..communications. Talking/media/etc. It's very much common sense and because of that, people assume that it's easy. Sometimes it is, sometimes not. I chose comm because I like that it's 100% applicable to my daily life. One day I can go to class and we'll have a lecture on maybe why some musicians reach really high levels of fame and most don't, and I can then go home and be like, OHHH so THATS why (insert crappy pop musician of your choice) is so popular! Some of it, like that, is kind of trivial. Other aspects are less so.

But yeah, that's why it's so impacted. Combined with the fact that it's a SUPER small department (which makes getting to know professors/making connections for internships/jobs much easier), there's just very little space.

The funny thing about comm is everyone assumes that comm majors are stupid because we talk about tv and video games and the internet and other stuff that people perceive as being fun, but at least at UCLA, most everyone is REALLY smart because you need such high grades to get in.

To put in economic aspect to reasons:

There is limited supplies of spaces, but the demand is extremely high. In another word, there is a shortage of available spaces. In order to pick the applicants who are best qualified to deserve a seat in the available spots, the adcom uses grade as the primary rationing device. Those with higher GPA is likely to get the spot over those who with lower GPA. So naturally, competition for higher grade occurs.

Allie has pointed out the reason for why people like to major in communications: Fun and Flexibility in career path. And because the demand is so high and the supply is so limited, competition is rigorous there, and because the competition is rigorous, competitors are most motivated to get good grade, and that's why the GPA is so high. It's not because they are smarter or anything; It's due to the natural competition.

Majors with lower demand tend to have lower avg GPA, because the competition isn't as rigor.

Yup, it is all about demand and supply.
If you are fascinated about how everything comes down to the basic law of supply and demand, go major in Economics :)

I didn't mean to make it sound like you had to be a genius to major in Comm. Just that those of us who do are not as intellectually vacant as those in other departments accuse us of being.

/These accusations usually come when they have 7 books to read in a week or a crazy chemistry test and we have a few articles, or a 4 page paper, or a 300 pg novel, or something equally ridiculous. I kind of don't blame them.

wow, look whose under you. I think he'd prefer to be on top though.

What is that suppose to mean?

That he prefers starting threads rather than being the first to respond to them?

then start a new one now!

I'm talking about Dhl3 fool.

EDIT: Your reading comprehension is poor. UCLA doesn't like that. But Berkeley does :D

DHL3 IS HOT! I dig smart dudes.
SAT scores, GPAs and EC's turn me on hells yea!
