Hello guys
I am a Sociology major, current GPA is a 3.4 hopefull it will be at a 3.6 by end of summer. I have seen different acceptance and rejections. Where high gpa’s were denied but some with a low gpa were accepted! UCLA has a diversity where they pick a pool of random not just high stats.
From CCC in NorCal
Major: Poli Sci

TAP: Yes and all honors classes completed
IGETC: Still gotta do the sciences
Pre-reqs: Ugh one class has not been made available to me yet

Quick question for honors classes, does UCLA want me to take my honors classes for my major? How much do they care? Also, I got a B+ for one of my major classes, so how bad is this?
Thank you!

Personal Statement:
Working on it so I can’t say for sure, but I will have them checked out by multiple faculty members from multiple departments at my school
Wrote about how I didn’t have an education for three years due to being trapped in Pakistan for losing my identification before adolescence
Wrote about my significant health problems and disabilities that preventing me from performing well in high school and how I am dealing with them currently in college
Wrote about how I’ve lost many family members during my time in high school and college that also prevented me from reaching my academic potential and the struggles my mother and I had to make when my father, in particular, died from an accident and the economic struggles that came with not having an income for the first 6 months.
Wrote about how I would like to earn 6 degrees within two years of enrolling at a CCC to show a testament toward my willingness to continually learn every day and take advantage of every opportunity this country has to offer after witnessing people in Pakistan who would give their left foot to receive any education in general.
EFC: 0
California Resident, USA
Asian American Male
Income below $15,000
Hooks
EOPS
DSPS
First Generation Officially, not so much Unofficially (My father and mother both got their degrees from Pakistan but there is no evidence that they had an education at all, not even in their government profiles, perhaps I’ll not consider myself as a first-generation student just to be safe
Ethnic Minority
Strengths:
Currently taking 15 units in the summer, 25 units in the fall, and 24 units in the spring while dealing with kidney problems, type 1 diabetes, Heart dysrhythmia, blood pressure issues, thyroid issues, and cholesterol issues at the age of 19. Also handling all this with running a business in which I need to travel 5 hours total front and back with my mother to Fremont to host exhibitions
Weaknesses:
Received 3 B’s in prerequisites required for my major at UCLA, which are Macro and Microeconomics and Financial Accounting. I want to explain my situation in spring 2018 why I received a B in Micro and Financial Accounting and tell them that my mother had heart problems and my doctor recently revealed I was at risk for undergoing kidney dialysis so I needed to focus more on my health, more so than my education.
I would like to be in more clubs and programs and interact more with the community. I will be in PTK and a business club in the fall so I don’t know how much that will affect my application. I’ve primarily been focused on my business and my education.
Applying:
UC Berkeley (Business Administration)
UC Los Angeles (Business Economics)
UC Irvine (Business Administration)
UC Davis (TAG- Managerial Economics)
UC Santa Barbara (Economics)
UC San Diego (Economics)
UC Riverside (Business Administration)
UC Merced (Management and Business Economics)

San Francisco State University (Business Administration)
San Diego State University (Business Administration - Emphasis in Finance)
Santa Clara University (Business Administration)
Major: Electrical Engineering
CCC Transfer
Major GPA: 3.75 (3.78 after TAU if I ace fall 2018 courses)
IGETC: Not required for engineering
TAP: No
Pre-reqs: Will be done by spring 2019 (Phys 3 and Diff Eq)
ECs: Basically nothing lol
Applying to: UCLA (top choice), UCSB (2nd choice), UCB, UCSD, UCI, UCD
UCLA is my dream school but very unlikely with a 3.78 GPA and still having to take 2 pre-reqs in the spring. Berkeley is out of the question. All strongly recommended courses for UCSB will be completed by spring so I’m hoping they will take me.
Not sure I’d say I’m faster than others. Also, mental issues. Not sure what that means but sometimes better to highlight strengths in essays and add the mental part in the additional comments at the end of the essays. There’s a part to add anything else. That’s my feeling anyway.
If you see my stats i posted previously and change the gpa from 3.76 to 3.85 what do you guys think my chances are?
Here’s my stats, if you could chance me that would be great
Major: Sociology
CCC Transfer from Palomar College
GPA: Currently at a 3.92, by the time I transfer I expect it to be around a 3.95
IGETC: Will be done by the end of fall semester
TAP: No
SAT Score: 1320 (I don’t know if they even ask for that)
Pre-Requisites for Major: Already completed
EC’S: Work 20 hours a week for an IT company, Volunteer at a middle school tutoring sheltered English students, In the Active Minds Club.
Personal Statements: For leadership I talked about how I convinced my parents to adopt one of my teammates because he was getting beaten and neglected by his parents. I talked about my sports background and how hard it was to step away from Football because it was such a significant portion of my life. (For context I had been playing since I was 4 and almost every waking moment of my life went towards playing it, studying it, training with big name coaches across the country, going to camp after camp after camp, etc.) And I’m working on the other two personal Statements right now.
Applying to: UCB (Top Choice), UCLA (2nd Choice), UCSB (TAG), UCSC, Cornell, NYU, and USC.
On kind of a side note, I keep getting emails to join Phi-Theta Kappa since I’m on the deans list, do you think it would be worth joining or am I doing enough stuff as it is?
CCC student from MJC and Santa Monica College, I transferred home from UCSB after my first quarter for some personal reasons.
Major: Sociology
GPA: will have a 3.68 or 3.81 depending on the grade I get in my summer chemistry class… it will also go up above after winter semester.
Major Prep/GPA: Done, 4.0
IGETC: Will be completed after Fall semester
TAP: No, since I transferred from UCSB it was too late for me to join a program.
Schools Applying: Cal Poly SLO, UCLA , UC Davis , UCI (???)
EC:
I work as a scribe in the emergency department.
Will be doing a lot of volunteering this upcoming semester and possibly getting a second job.
I have a lot of volunteering from high school as well.
Possibly more coming this fall… will update.
Any advice on more to do or what could help my chances??? Thank you in advance
Hello everyone! I was in your shoes last year while I worked on my admissions essays and waiting for decisions. I can’t believe it’s already time for the new class to start applications.
It is a very nerve wrecking process. However, I was admitted as a transfer. And just FYI, IGETC isn’t mandatory, but it does help. Here are my stats:
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.8
TAP: No, it was not offered at my school.
EC:
Marching band in high school, which was about it.
In my essays, I did talk about the hardships I went through as a single mother and a medical procedure that affected my academic goals.
I also applied for the Honors program at UCLA, and I was admitted into that too
PS. Don’t be discouraged if you get rejected from other schools. I found it funny that I was rejected from UCR, but I was admitted to UCSB, UCSD, and UCLA.
Also, UCLA released decisions on April 25th, and UCSD on the 26th. Berkeley released decisions on the 27th, which was the last to release of all UC’s.
I wish you all the best and hope to see you guys around campus next year
Thank you @psychtransfer2018 - your post was super helpful and covered so many of the things that drive us all mad
@psychtransfer2018
Do you have an idea to why you didn’t get admitted to UCR?
Hello everyone! If you could, please chance me! (Needs advice)
Major: Psychology (alternate major: Sociology)
GPA: 3.86

(Will start volunteering at a hospital in a few weeks for behavioral/mental health)
Personal Statements:
- My personal story of being an immigrant and not knowing how to speak English… to becoming an advocate for mental health and immigrants through public speaking/films.
- Mental Health: Wrote about how the suicide of a friend and a family member drove me to work against the negative stereotypes that comes with mental health illnesses.
CONCERNS: I have 4 W’s.
Planning to write on the additional comments about my struggle with anxiety, which ultimately lead me to dropping almost all my classes during my first semester of college. (I had to go to the E.R multiple times due to severe chest pains and high heart rates.) My anxiety began last year; I was one of the many people whose admission were withdrawn from UC Irvine last year during summer. (Money issues, sacrificed more than $800 to attend UCI, disappointed myself and my family, was at a low point in my life, brought up all my insecurities etc.)… will write about how I’m getting better through exercise, healthier diets, etc.
I don’t know whether I should write about this because I don’t know UC’s perspective on mental health problems. (do they see this as a weakness?)
Any advice?
Does anyone here who maybe is in 3rd year at community college and only needs classes this fall to be finished with 60 semester units , major prerequisites, IGETC and associate degree plan on taking classes in spring even if you don’t “need them” for anything? Anyone know if UCLA cares if you don’t plan to take any spring classes?
