UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@sleepypolarbear best of luck to you!! Regardless if either of us get in, I like to think of the Ling & CS applicants are a little family who all happened to stumble upon the relatively high acceptance rate  Did you have a lot of foreign language credits? I don’t because I was focusing on getting into an actual CS program, so I am a little worried.

@nugnugnugnug I also applied to Ling + CS. Did you get a year of FL done? That’s the only pre req and as long as you have that you are fine and they will consider your app

UCLA literally got me like…

I got into UCI. I thought I wouldnt idk.

@stackofsocks UCLA is one of my top picks along with UCI and UCSD since I reside in SoCal! Hopefully we both get accepted! Good luck with N1!

@nugnugnugnug haha yeah the acceptance rate is crazy higher compared to just comp sci, and its perfect for me because i plan on doing research in computational linguistics :^)

i took a year of ASL so ive finished the requirement (and then comp sci classes so im not stuck taking a ton of gen eds after transferring)

@mpineda3247 no, I only have high school spanish and french :frowning: good luck though. Man, I’m getting down over this foreign language stuff. I guess my appeal is going to look a lot like “PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU I PROMISE I KNOW SOME SPANISH AND LOGIC AND C++”

You have Calc 1 and 2 done right? And does your CC offer linguistics?

@nugnugnugnug were they AP? if they were AP you’re probably okay but i think they want 2 semesters/quarters of the same language

i considered applying as a ling + comp sci major but in my cc i changed majors twice and didn’t want to start over with pre reqs or fall behind so i kept eng. my cc offers a lot of foreign languages including asl but in recent years went through accreditation loss and many foreign language courses were cut (another reason i chose not to major in ling).

best luck to you all.

For language related majors, your cc needs to convert high school credits to their units or whatever they’re willing to give you and then UCLA goes off that. But its too late now, UCLA gonna look at it the way you listed it

hey guys, can you guys chance me.
I go to 4 year uni and I should complete 62 units after this semester. I took 39 units from 4 year institute and 23 units from ccc. I have 3.7 GPA and applied for non impacted major.

@nugnugnugnug yes I have my calc 1 & 2 done. Lower gpa tho. But no my school doesn’t have ling

So I have been lurking the past few days but decided to sign up to see if anyone is in my boat.

I’m a 37 y/o “returning student” and was wondering if any other more “mature” transfer applicants are on here?
History Major gpa 3.5.
Already admitted to UCSB, UCSC and UCI. Just waiting on UCLA and Cal. Any other like me on here?

Hey @bendestraw, I’m 25 and attended UC Davis after high school during the 2011-2012 school year but then withdrew and started working. I recently went back to school in the summer of 2017. I have a 3.3 gpa with straight A’s since I returned to school so I’m hoping the admissions committee places more emphasis on my more recent grades. I was admitted to UCSB & UCI so far.
I applied as Comparative Literature for UCLA and Cal. Nice to see another returning student here. My top choice is UCLA because I live in the LA area which would mean a nice 30 minute drive without having to move. What’s your top choice?

@StudentAgain My top choices are Cal and UCLA, but need more info on student life and things like housing and whatnot. The horror stories of Cal scare me but I’m trying to not put too much stock into them. I need to devote time to checking them out individually but it’s hard when I’m taking 20 units this semester and working on the weekends. My third choice is prob SB. Sadly, one big factor for me is housing, whether it be guaranteed, in budget, and being 37, the ability to not live in a dorm or sharing a bedroom. No offense to newly admitted freshman, but being twice the age of a roomie might be an issue. So much swirling around in this noggin.

Even getting into ANY of these colleges is an amazing feat on its own. I dropped out of high school in 1999. Lived a crazy life (I’ll spare you the details) and decided two years ago to make a serious change.

LOL what are my chances?
I have like 3.6 accumulative GPA.
I’m a psychology major and applied for their psychology program (finished all of their psych department requirements fall 2018)
I’ve finished all my GEs as well.
I will have around 115 credits by the end of this school year (hopefully).

@bendestraw yea housing is definitely a big factor for me too. I’d prefer to just stay where I am and not have to stress about moving and new leases.
Honestly I was shocked when I got into UCI today because when I left Davis I never even thought I would go back to school. I guess we both decided to go back two years ago.
Well congrats on your accomplishments - especially making the decision to go back. I hope you get into both LA and Cal! I’ve heard LA has a nice transfer community especially for us “non-trads”.

@bendestraw It sounds like we have a lot in common! ;D

I’m about to be 28. A little younger but I definitely feel mature compared to my 20-year-old self. Non-traditional applicant too; I was out of school for 8 years before getting myself together and going to school.

I know it is too late to figure out. I am a CA resident, but I lived and completed high school in a different country. Thus, I have three years of foreign language courses. But, I haven’t given my high school diploma to my cc because the counselor told me that I can give it after I got the admission. But, after I read the thread, I feel like I should give the school before I submitted the UC application. In the UC application, I wrote I finished ALL the ge classes. But, is that possible that UCs consider I didn’t complete the language course and rejected me because I didn’t give any proof. I am really worried because I just got rejected from UCSC. I know one of the reason is that I couldn’t finish my major classes. I only apply five school- UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCSC and still not get any offer rn. My goal is UCLA and UCB that I finished their pre-major and ge before this spring.
