UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

Do they at least announce a couple days before? Or are they going to notify us on the same day

@zk00

I assume we will know a day or 2 before.

We’ll know it’s coming when the portal shuts down and would say it won’t be available until a certain day and certain evening. That’s how it was when Freshmen decisions came out.

I really hope they come out next week but i doubt it

next week is kind of the “last 2 weeks” of april so its very plausible, because they usually come out Wednesday and there is only 2 left, the 17th and the 24th

Desperate to find a person with a European studies major, find one for meeee

Any other Public Affairs major applicants here?

I was pretty set of Political Science, but after realizing it was a highly impacted major with an extremely low admit rate, decided to look at other options.

Found the new Public Affairs B.A. major at the Luksin School of Public Policy. Before application time, I called the chair of the undergraduate program, and we compared Poli Sci and the new PubAffairs majors.

She essentially told me “our program is so new, we are still working kinks out; will be very lenient with applicants compared to other majors.” The kicker was when she said “last year, our first year, we had 18 applicants - because no one knows we exist - and we admitted all 18. So looking at that and Poli Sci, take your chances.”

Really hoping I make it in! I feel like a Bruin at heart.

Does anyone know if its hard to get a job with work study?

@PoliticalNerd OMG YES! MEEEEE!!! I applied for Public Affairs! Basically I got the same feedback when I went to visit them last year to discuss the major. But I had no idea they only admitted 18. This makes me soooooo excited!!! I haven’t found anyone really who has applied for the major (obviously). It’s curious because it didn’t seem like they really marketed it much this year as well? Or do you think otherwise because I’m living in DTLA & I was only made aware literally by accident & when I found out it was new it felt meant to be. I mentioned to them that I probably wouldn’t have all the pre-req’s and they said that it would be fine because when I visited them they said that they hadn’t even figured out the pre-reqs yet! So aside from what I’ve done, grades, etc I feel like that’s what I really have going for me. I would love to hear your stats!! I posted mine like a day or two ago if you want to check it out! Plus I would love to hear what you think/chance each other lol.

Any spanish or linguistics majors?

Not linguistics but I am Iranian Studies!

@Randapanda126 Ling + CS major if that counts? Lol

@Randapanda126 @Collegegirlie7 Hey! Language people! I have a question. The major prep says

“To be considered for this major, you must complete the following courses by the end of the spring before transfer:
One year of college level declared language OR at least one year of high school in which the primary language of instruction was declared language.”

Ok cool we got that right. Then to be more competitive you do more major prep right, but for us that would be another year of the language. Well you see, I took french for 3 years but that was only in high school. The extra prep bullets on the ucla prep website says another year of college level language. Would the 3 years of high school french equate to that? I got a 3 on the Ap test so I guess thats college level idk. Thoughts?

I know 2 years high school = 1 year college. Based on that formula, it would seem that three years of high school = 1.5 years college level, so I assume you’re short.

The people that can answer this are your college advisors.

@Ohm888 Oh. Interesting. But they ask for one year of high school. So 1 year = 1 year. Then they say another year college level, so the other 2 would equal that one. whatever doesnt matter youre right, imma double check with dem advisors.

@PoliticalNerd I had no idea that there was even a Public Affairs major prior to applying. I really wish that I had as I would have picked that. I actually have been looking at the requirement page and noticed that it said only freshman & sophomores could elect to change their major to Public Affairs but it said that was only during the 2018-19 school year so I am hoping that juniors can next year cause I would switch to it in a heartbeat.

Personally, I think Public Affairs is much more interesting than simple Political Science.

Hey all,

I’ve searched College Confidential pretty thoroughly regarding this, but it seems that there is not too much information about Linguistics and Computer Science. Regarding the language requirement, is it an automatic denial if it is not completed? I took four years of Spanish in high school, but I am not sure if this fulfills the requirement. Also, how strict are they in terms of major preparation for this major? I have completed discrete math, two calculus courses, and will have completed around four to five computer science courses by the end of this quarter. My GPA is 4.0, but I am not sure if this is sufficient for acceptance into this major. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

@Princetonian9
Two years of high school language equals one year of college.There are some accelerated language courses at some CCCs that complete the college year in a one semester course. It usually has 5 semester units. You might be able to find the second level accelerated.

But they didn’t say one year of high school language. They said one year of college language or one year in high school where the language of instruction was the foreign language. In other words, you went to a French school where every course was taught in French.

@Ohm888 Wait wait wait. Bruh. Are you certain thats what that means!? I spoke to a UCLA rep at my cc months ago and she never mentioned that. I just mentioned I took french in high school and she was like ok cool that covers that. Woah if thats the case im ruined :astonished:

@lcsucla
Hey, I was in the same boat for a while, also Ling CS. After consulting ucla reps, counselors and researching, I can tell you that the foreign language requirement is regarding college level language classes and not high school. I have never heard of the language class formula thing that Ohm888 mentioned, but it can be worth reaching out to a counselor about. AFAIK, that requirement is stated as a minimum eligibility for consideration as noted in the website, and it explicitly mentions college level language classes. All other CS pre reqs and such are mainly adding to your competitiveness beyond that minimum eligibility.

you can view it here: http://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/lsmajors/ling.htm
-“To be considered for this major…” is the important wording
