UCLA Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@surefineitsok I came across your post about your major it’s crazy because I wanted to do the same as well I was so set on Public Health but since Ucla only has that as a minor I applied with Comparative Literature as well! So crazy how similar our paths are! Good luck to you!

I think we all come back to these threads to remind ourselves it’s okay to feel so anxious!

It’s a very important and decisive time in our lives - we should be excited/nervous/anxious/happy! lol

@surefineitsok BME is a great field! The first piece of advice my brother and his friends always give is “If you can imagine yourself doing anything besides practicing medicine. Literally anything else. Do that instead.”

But always follow your heart n stuff  Best of luck!

@willowstil where did your brother go for medical school and residency?

Why do his friends say to do anything besides medicine… ominous lol

@jedenic yeah, I noticed the same last night. Like everyone was so supportive and it was nothing but good vibes. No tense exchanges or negative comments.

I called the admissions office this morning to see if their voicemail message has changed. It hasn’t :frowning:

@warriors2k19 your ECs are weak (only 2 terms as senator?) but I think your gpa might save you

@Warriors2k19 you made my day

@alscott He went to U of Minnesota for med school, then Nationwide Children’s for residency, now he’s doing his fellowship at Lucile Packard/Stanford Children’s.

I think they say it because some people drastically underestimate the difficulty of becoming a doctor. They saw people in their classes and colleagues suffer immensely and become callous and disillusioned. They slaved away for 12 years and put their lives on hold for a career that isn’t nearly as glamorous or prestigious as they once thought. I mean, residency is 3-8 years of working 60-80 hours a week getting paid like $15 bucks an hour and still getting reamed by attendings and nurses alike. So I think they say that because if you’re not 100 percent absolutely committed to becoming a doctor, as in you can’t see yourself possibly doing anything else, then you might be setting yourself up for years of discontentment. People do it for the money, prestige, family pressure, etc don’t fare as well as those who do it because it’s their one true passion. My brother is a lot happier than most cause he’s in paeds, but he’s still like 200,000 dollars in debt and just now starting to make money at the age of 32.

Sorry that was long lol. I care a lot about my premed buddies cause I wan’t y’all to be happy n healthy in the long run

@willowstil Oh right on. That’s actually really good advice. Thanks for passing it on

@Warriors2k19 dude honestly U have by FAR the best stats here holy crap

Honestly I almost wrote an uc personal insight essay whatever on how good I am at clapping

Y’all I’m HELLA good at clapping ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@UniCoIn haha honestly what a coincidence. I wish they had an extensive public health program like USC does for undergrads. Partly the reason why I applied to USC as well.

@willowstil True! I just have been going back and forth mostly of my fear of failing and in addition my GPA isn’t the greatest too (like 3.5 range). Also personal reasons where I’d like to leave my home and kind of be alone. going to med school and the costs of that probably would set me back leaving for awhile tbh

@surefineitsok I hope you get in too!!

@ucla9631 Yoooo any update for me

@Warriors2k19 Honestly you are overqualified and better than my stats, your GPA is amazing.

He’s definitely got Ivy stats

@Princetonian9 What are your questions!? I’ll try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Oh i was gonna ask if you spoke to an adviser about the language requirement, if high school language is okay to cover the to be considered

im losing my mind knowing we could possibly be notified about decisions in 2 days. I hope we’ll hear back by the 17th but I feel like they won’t come out until the 24th
