UCLA Film and Television

Hi everybody I've been lurking around the site for a while and finally decided to join in.

I want to transfer to UCLA for their Film and Television major. I looked at assist.org and seen that they have no "real" prerequisites but only "recommended" courses such as:
American film history
European film history
American television history
one theater course.

All of which will be done by the end of this spring (2013). Even though I will not be applying until next year for fall 2014 admissions.

My question is:
Since I will have so much time left after completing my IGETC and "prerequisites" does anybody know of anything else I could/should be taking/doing to boost my chances of getting accepted? After looking and seeing in 2012 the major had a 2.76% admittance rate and 2011 was only slightly better at 3.53% I really want to be sure I'm doing all I can.

I also want to reassure you all that UCLA is not the only school I will be applying to. I know better than to put all my eggs in one basket.

Make sure to keep your GPA high, so don’t forget about getting A’s in your GE classes.

Also for any class you take, check to see if it’s transferable first by selecting your CC on assist.org, then underneath it select UC transferable courses, and finally select a deptartment. Always check for every class, or you could end up wasting time, effort and money (unless it’s a prerequisite class for a transferable one). It’s a good idea to check for CSUs too if you were planning on applying to any. I wasn’t aware of this feature until recently, and it could save you some stress knowing your classes will transfer up.

Another thing I might recommend for UCLA specifically is their TAP program. This is similar to TAGing, but TAP only gives you preference. How this relates to your time at CC is that you’d need to take a certain amount of honors credit (15 at my CC). You might have to also attend some honors club meetings and do a few hours of community service, but it’s really not to big of a commitment. It’s a little extra work, but if you want to “do all that you can,” do TAP/honors. As a psych major who really wants to go to UCLA, I think it’s a pretty good investment.

Don’t forget about this either:

“Additional admission requirements include a personal essay, a critical essay, a creative writing sample, and two letters of recommendation” (from assist)

It’s never too early to start working on these.
